  1. There is a master password for those.

You can get the master password for your Dell by calling Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896.

Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of your Latitude.

If you were not the original owner of the Latitude, Dell will transfer registration of the used Latitude from the original owner with only the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the tag on the laptop.

To transfer the registration of a used Dell Latitude, fill out the Transfer of Ownership form on Dell's web site.

Or....if you are handy with a screwdriver,,,,

you can remove the bottom cover and locate the battery on the mobo and remove it for about 8 to 10 minutes and that will reset the password.

The battery looks like a giant watch battery.

  2. I agree about Samsung branded quality.

I have never had a problem with any Samsung product I own.

The Samsung branded plasma set that is almost  identical to my Akai  HAS 3 cooling fans in it.

The Akai brand SMPS board I got from an Akai service center was $545.00 but they generously gave me a 10% discount on it.

I later discovered that the exact same board with the Samsung name on it was only $340.00 and the old board had a core value of $50.00.

    Live and learn...

  3. My Akai plasma set has no cooling fans.

That's why the SMPS board failed.

When it is on you can hold your hand 18 inches away from the screen and still feel the heat from it.

It uses almost 600 watts of power when on.

Some LCD models of the same size use less than 250 watts.

BTW my next set will not be an Akai model.

The failed board in mine had 5 headers on it for fans, all unused.

It's been 2 years since I replaced the board and it is still working but it wouldn't surprise me at any time to turn it on and see nothing but the blinking error code on the red LED on it.

Note for those who like the brand Samsung: This Akai I have was made by Samsung; the only thing Akai on it is the brand name.

  4. I would also recommend getting the extended protection plan with any LCD or plasma set.

I didn't and it cost me almost $500.00 for a power supply board for my Akai plasma set just 3 months after the warranty expired on it.

Would have been close to $800.00 if I hadn't installed it myself.

My next set will be an LCD.

Plasmas are power hogs and generate massive amounts of heat.

  5. Run it and select do a scan only.

Scroll down until you find this entry: F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,wvcst.bat

Place a tick in the box beside of this entry.

Make sure your web browser IE or Firefox or whatever is closed.

Scroll all the way to the bottom and hit fix selected.

If a message box appears click ok.

That may or may not solve your issue.

There is a lot of stuff listed there that shouldn't be there.

I would suggest that you follow Tommie's advice above and post the logfile on the hijackthis forum where there are people way more experienced than I am with it that will help you get your computer cleaned up.

  6. The only way they can put a cap on your monthly usage is that they have to change the ToS. But since they are too lazy to do that, they wont. No one(in this country at least) is gonna go with an ISP who puts a monthly limit on net usage. No need getting worked up over this crap !

Obviously you have never read any of the ISP's TOSs.

Basiclly they all say that the company can do anything at any time for any reason or even for no reason that they feel like doing and that you the user will like it.

And they also explicitly state that they do not even have to provide the service at all but you are still required to pay for it as long as you have an account with them.

    Don't believe me?

Go read the one that applies to you, that is, if you can ferret it out on your provider's website.

  7. :2funny:  Me,  WTF is OS X , I thought I was a kinda win 3.1 sort of guy?? I loved win M.E. , aparently some guys didn't ,

 Vern , we meet again  :evil2:

whats this assembly stuff , I used to do that at Jr.school , being apparently the only one that could read , I read the daily sermon at assembly , does that count ,

I forget exactly how we wrote it but it went something like this for assembly: "you always know exactly where you are and exactly how you got there but no one else does, ever."

    ;-------------------------------START--------------------------tut.asm

; set some options for the assembler

    .386P

    Locals

    jumps

    .Model Flat ,StdCall

    mb_ok    equ 0              ;mb_ok gets the value "0"

    hWnd      equ 0

lpText    equ offset text    ;set a pointer to the text

lpCaption equ offset caption  ;set a pointer to the caption

; declaration of all used API-functions

extrn    ExitProcess    : PROC    ;procedure to shut down a process

extrn    MessageBoxA    : PROC    ;procedure to show a MessageBox

    ; here begins our Data

    .Data

text    db "Hello World",13,10 ; first row of the text(with word-wrap)

db "_masta_ greets everybody who reads this tut",0

; second row, terminated with "0"

    caption  db "Hello",0 ;Captionstring, 0-terminated

; and here we start with our code

    .Code

; lets greet the world  :))

push mb_ok              ;PUSH value for uType

push lpCaption          ;PUSH Pointer to Caption

push lpText            ;PUSH Pointer to Text

            push hWnd              ;PUSH Masterhandle

            call MessageBoxA        ;CALL MessageBoxA

            CALL    ExitProcess    ;End (exit) program

End Main                        ;End of code, Main is the entrypoint

    ;-----------------------------------END------------------------tut.asm

edit: The pain meds are strong today.

Dunno why but I was thinking of the what programing language are you test.

    Carry on.

  8. Before I would pay for a program, I would need to see it actually work on at least one or 2 files.

I would suggest googling around and trying out various software until you find one that will let you recover some of the files with the demo version so you know it will work for you before you buy.

I don't have personal experience with this but a friend highly recommends this.

    http://www.r-studio.com/#rstudio_NTFS

Not sure if the demo lets you recover anything though.

    Good luck.

  9. I don't know of any freeware data recovery software that works.

And even most of the commercial software doesn't work either.

Most of the time the demo will "find" deleted files and you pay for the version that will recover them only to find that all you have is the fill name; not the usable file.

There used to be an Unformat command in DOS.

Not sure if that still works or not.

I keep a complete copy of my entire hard drive on an external drive that I update at least once per month so I haven't had a need for data recovery software for a some time now.

  10. im

I am returning the laptop to get it fix or hopefully replace

I wonder how i will explain that

Got a lil to close to the fireplace?

when it is 103* today in my town?

Excuse number 3: - " I have no clue what happened. I was just sitting there reading my mail and all of a sudden it burst into flames."
