  1. Althou hughes will not admit it, it's probably their NOC center issue. You need to be moved to another satellite but you must enter a trouble ticket and when the guy arrives try forcing him to move to another satellite.  When you call they will try other frequencies and just demand a try at another frequency. If that fails and they issue a trouble ticket, then pull the request to be moved to another satellite...

I would have to disagree with a NOC issue. Checking other forums there are no complains that would be constant with an issue because it would effect a number of people and not just one. I still have a site using G11 steady and faithful from the day initiated. Slow downs are dependent on the amount of traffic since the transponders are more limited than land lines.

  2. I live where I can almost hear the thundering water fall, I sometimes can see the mist from it. Many times this location is protected from the winter force, a spot if I could climb a tall enough tree I can see 2 large lakes to the north and to the south. The water from the thundering water fall flows north here from the south lake to the north lake. Here in the spring the water comes out of the ground in different locations one spot I found many years ago (in a small pond my aunts and uncles skated on when they were kids) the water will surface and flow east and west. I live where we have 4 full seasons, and all the weather to go with it. Like an oasis in a populated area and somewhat still back in time. this is where I live. Sometimes in 15 minutes we can be in another country to the north where summer can be much shorter. This spot has been my home all my life, a good place ot come back to. :smile2:

  3. A yagi is good if you know where to point it exactly. It is a directional antenna. I used both and gained "2" signal strength. Not much for the money. But one never knows till they try. And I am 3 miles from my tower. But several tree's between me and my neighbor.

Want to borrow one of my chain saws?, may equal more speed.

  4. I've learned some things in the last 2 days.

I've done a lot of adjusting of my sat dishes and knew that there was something else wrong. So I went on about con calls etc today to try and get some work done, meanwhile keeping the antenna pointing sig strength meter on the desktop. After it sat there for about an hour at 15 and bouncing to 30 and then back to 15, it suddenly went to 70 and stayed there for about 15 minutes, then dropped again. Incidentally, few if any clouds. Then about 20 minutes later it went back to 70 so I did an auto cross-pol and it passed. I then was able to re-register and now I have the connection back.

Very frustrating, not sure what was going on at NOC to finally get a good signal and it stay there. We'll see how long it lasts.

    1. I think DWay will sometimes change me to a different frequency without me knowing. It happened in the past and I just adjusted for the new freq and moved on.

    2. Adjusting the dish is a joke if you haven't been on a frequency before or try others then try to go back to the one you were on.

Anyhow, nothing about this is straight forward and I'm still not convinced that there wasn't something wrong on the NOC end. We'll see how long this signal lasts.

Also, I am on the pro plan and only get download speeds of 500-600 with the HN7000s modem. It sucks but I'll be damned if I'm messing with it anytime soon. when I first got the modem, speeds were around 1k.

First of all you cannot pick a frequency of your own, each transponder has it's own frequency and polarization and is given to your from NOC (First Registration Process). The modem will automatically go back to your assigned frequency until NOC changes it. You may think you have changed it in the setup but once you reboot it goes right back to the assigned transponder so it is very important that it is adjusted to the highest possible numbers which I believe most installers don't have the time to do.

You mention a lot of adjusting on the sat dishes but don't confuse this with a TV dish, these transmit and are a great deal more sensitive. I got one of the first 2-way systems and it is still functioning steadily even after being moved to different locations and it is also on G11 -  1370.

Having problems as yours I would first check all ends of the coax for any corrosion and make sure the feedhorn is clear and no moisture behind the cover that can distort signal. I would go through and thoroughly eliminate problems on my end before calling and most of the time problem solved before making a call that can add more frustration.

  5. I'm paying for EVDO service but I'm not in an EVDO area.  Sprint dosen't offer a "Home" service just mobile service, so even though I don't own a laptop I'm paying for the ability to use their EVDO network.

Doing some research I've found that Centennial Wireless out of Fort Wayne Indiana offers GSM wireless in my area.  Any opinion on wiether this would be a better connection than what I get from Sprint?  They offer 236kbs down but if it's like any other service I can only plan on getting half of that consistantly.

    I found the following information:

"When the card is out of EV-DO range the Compass 597 drops to the much slower 1X system, with speeds around 100 Kbps."

" from the tests, the better the EV-DO signal, the faster the performance. It's also pretty clear that some EV-DO Rev A coverage areas are MUCH faster than others."

Are you using an external antenna with this modem? If not it probably would be a good idea to investigate them.

  6. I moved and recently signed up for Sprint wireless for my home connection.  I'm less than 2 miles from the tower and pay $59.99 a month for 5MB down.

I connect with a Sierrawireless Compass 597 through a Cradlepoint MB1000 router.  Is this all I can expect with this type of connection?

I think better can be done. What you need to remember is that most wireless connections may not preform best just setting them up. I had trouble at first and had to move my router card combo to a spot so it wasn't bouncing between 2 towers plus I use an outdoor antenna. There could be a number of reasons yours is slow and I found the signal meant the most.
