How do I fix that?

Ok guys I need your help. The Comcast man is coming to take a look at my craptastic speeds on Sunday and I need some advice before he gets here. Those guys aren't usually the brightest bulbs in the drawer. Here's my stats, starting with Van Buren's Sticky:
1) Windows XP, SP2 - p2p fix applied.
2) Comcast - 8000/768
3) Tweaks installed and current settings:

I truly am lost guys. Any and all advice will greatly be appreciated. Thanks, and sorry about the long post, but I hope it provides some details for you.

They said nope don't have it, and can't give a time table on when it will be available. I figured with Nashville being one of the largest cities in the south we would be one of the first to get it. We always have been with other services, like cable internet. Well has anyone else heard anything different or have any idea about when they might be bringing FIOS to Nashville?
-
Wow. Can anyone say hey tim. Lucky guess. That would be the truth.
Say what??
-
Thanks for the reply, and yup I think I've narrowed it down to a problem with my motherboard. I've checked the Device Manager and there aren't any conflicts that I can see in there...And I have the most updated drivers for my motherboard
-
Ok I checked my RAM...that wasn't the problem. I switched out my NIC yet again. So this is the third one I've tried. Same problem. I max out at 4.5 and occasionally can hit 5.0. I've tried 2 different Cat 5 cables and both do the same thing. Both Cat 5 cables when in my laptop get 6 on the nose everytime. When I hook my desktop up by USB I get around 5.7 consistently. Excuse my French but what in THE hell could possibly cause this??? And I did what you said with the MTU VanBuren and there is no change.
-
Might want to be careful there.
-
The NIC I'm taking home to replace mine with is an old 3Com.

Couldn't agree with you more.
-
Check your ram. Sounds strange i know. But my computer did kinda the same thing. Was ok at first then got slower and slower. And your sure your ehternet card in your compuer is ok fine. Thats my guess.
I'm at work now, but I'll check the RAM when I get home. My BIOS checks the RAM on bootup and it doesn't detect any errors and Windows is still showing the full 1024mb. I have 2 DDR 512 sticks, so I'll try to use them 1 at a time and see if that does anything. Maybe if only one is bad that will fix the problem. I know I'll only get single rate transfer but atleast it's a way to troubleshoot. And I'm pretty sure it's not my ethernet card as I've tried my onboard LAN and a PCI NIC. I'm bringing an old 3Com 10/100 NIC home today from work and I'll give it a shot.
-
I have changed the cable before, and then using the same cable with my laptop is when I get the great speeds. Then when I hook it into the desktop speeds drop off dramatically. How much bandwidth do I lose using the USB cable instead of the cat5?
-
Well to further narrow things down, I installed the USB drivers for my modem. A motorola 5100 by the way. Now I"m getting speeds consistently around 5.7...A huge improvement over the ethernet connection. So I thought well maybe it was my NIC. And then I remembered it is built in to my Gigabyte 8IK1100 motherborad. So I took an old NIC out of an old computer and installed it. Same problem. Speeds only around 4.5 or so. Any idea what's causing this?
-
I have the 6000/768 Comcast service. You can see my other thread on the issue here. http://www.testmy.net/topic-3779
Well after Comcast couldn't figure out what the problem was, I kept playing with it. I formatted my computer and started from scratch. Installed the new updated drivers and I'm still having the same problem. Can't get speeds above 4.5 and they are very erratic. So I brought my laptop home from work. Plug it up and guess what? Consistently speeds of 6.2 down. So what in the world is wrong with my desktop? It obviously isn't a conflict, or an outdated driver, I formatted the thing! I'm about to chuck it out the window.
-
Pirate say what?
What?
-
I'm not sure on the specifics but Graywolfie is the first person that has put a credible explanation out there on the reason some of us get such great speeds at first, and then bam. Sucko. But I'm not sure on the ip situation. Maybe there is something else that "expires" after a couple of weeks or about a month?
-
Supervisor is coming out to my home this morning...I'll post the results after he leaves.
-
The problem you've described is exactly my problem. What area are you in? You might want to check out the thread I started, maybe something in that might be able to help you out. http://www.testmy.net/topic-3779
-
Well the Comcast Tech just left. He was very helpful, climbed through the attic. Looked at my connection. Replaced all my cable lines. Couldn't find anything wrong at all. Said my signal was fine. But I'm still getting horrible speeds and some packet loss. He saw it, and said "Man, that just isn't right". He told me he was going to call his supervisor and tell him that I've got problems but he can't figure out what it is.
-
I followed your advice...Called and threatened to cancel. They're sending another tech out this afternoon. I'll post the results of that as soon as they leave.
-
I'm in the Nashville, TN area. They just upgraded this area a couple of months ago. Maybe more people are starting to sign up and then sign up for the 6mbit upgrade. Hopefully I'll see an improvement soon, but I'm not holding my breath
-
Changed my Ethernet cable and power cycled my modem. No change. I've had 4 tech's out here from Comcast. Their supervisor knows me on a first name basis. Unfortunately, they say there's nothing they can do for me. They say my signal is great and don't understand why I'm having a problem. And I have no idea either. Like I said, it worked fine for about a month after the upgrade, and then bam. Sucky speeds. But thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
