Wiz86 Posted December 28, 2005 CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 Ok I used to get between 1200-1800 KB/s when using Neewsleecher & my speed tests were close to 6000/300. In the past week my speed has dropped. Couple of things I did just prior to the decrease was: 1. Updated through Windows Update. 2. Got & installed Vonage with the Linksys RTP300. I have Mediacom cable connection with an Arris modem, Belkin wireless router & the Linksys RTP300. Have it setup as Modem into the Belkin router then have the RTP300 run off one of the ethernet ports on the Belkin. Not sure exactly what my setup should be with these components or what my settings should be for the router/s. Should I just use the RTP300 as the router & the Belkin as an AP? Here are test results etc: :::.. Voltageman Posted December 28, 2005 CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 Are you saying that your pc is behind 2 routers? If that is the case, you may want to turn off firewall in second router(or put pc in the DMZ or the second router, since 1st router should be protecting you)...The SPI will slow things down a bit.. It could be communication problem between the routers, causing retransmission, which would slow you down also.. Try testing pc behind first router, and see if there is a difference in speed.. Also check this page out if you haven't yet.. http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=2097.
cdf216 Posted December 28, 2005 CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 Hate to put it to you this way but your speeds are exactly what they should be for windows defaults. I'm guessing that through newsleecher 90% of what was being download was headers and text posts. that's the only way possible for you to reach 1200-1800 KiloBytes per second. Through compression.. where as the test from testmy is a non-compressable file. and shows true speed. But i'm going to go with your statement that you are on a 6000/300 conection and have you try this file and see if it makes a difference:
compuworm Posted December 28, 2005 CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 I would not recommend placing your computer in a DMZ mode this will open all ports and make you more susceptible to outside attacks! compuworm P.S. 4cdf216, hey what version is that ccs file from 5, 6, or 7? Just to let you know if its from version 6 increasing the RWIN to 513920 gave me excellent results. I am with comcast and my caps are 6000/384. On average I get 6900 down and thats with firewall up. It's not one of Vanburen's files, it's a custom made one using the j9zrl websites cablenut calculator. quick and easy to get settings for those odd speed combos. THe only major problem it has is it won't do calculations for any connection over 10Mbps, it assumes they are 10 Mbps. As for 513920 getting you a better result that's very possible as bandwidth is latency dependant. I usually design files with a 100ms latency, though if you are high latency 200 ms or even 500 ms may be needed.
compuworm Posted December 28, 2005 CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 I haven't tested my Latency in some time, what packet size and numbers of pings per URL do you recommend? Also, what are your thoughts on URLs to ping so as to get a good test results? thanks, compuworm ackets: Sent = 30, Received = 30, Lost = 0 (0% loss) Approximate round trip times (RTT) in milli-seconds: Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 152ms, Average = 63ms P.S. You know now that I think of it, exactly what is the best absolute way to test Latency. What are the criteria I should be following?

Wiz86 Posted December 28, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 Thanks The RTP300 is just used for the Vonage phone adapter it is connected to 1 of the 4 ethernet ports on the Belkin which is my main router.
cdf216 Posted December 28, 2005 CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 yes, though I reccommend you try testing upload with a larger file. perhaps the 1013 kB one... 97 kB is too small for an accurate reading as even at dial up speeds it only takes 15-30 seconds to upload. cdf216 Posted December 28, 2005 CID Share Posted December 28, 2005 Looks good seems your upload limit is 256 kbps and 250 out of that is outstanding. 97.6% of limit to be exact.
