FallowEarth Posted January 3, 2006 CID Share Posted January 3, 2006 Welcome to the forum, Kingknight67. Looks like some latency between the router and the modem. Try making a direct connection and testing speeds again. BTW, what are your advertised speeds?
Kingknight67 Posted January 3, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 3, 2006 i tried it with a direct connection before and results weren't that great either and I can't make a direct connection now or my sister will get mad =. I think my advertised speed is 10 Mbps

FallowEarth Posted January 3, 2006 CID Share Posted January 3, 2006 Then I would suggest scanning your system with the free programs suggested in the sticky (sometimes it's a good idea to pick up an extra one if you already have em) and then trying cablenut to tweak your connection. Kingknight67 Posted January 4, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 4, 2006 Please help, I'm getting real slow speeds compared to when I just started this isp. I tried cablenut, downloading many things to speed up, I cleaned out my computer. It is still slow
cdf216 Posted January 4, 2006 CID Share Posted January 4, 2006 KingKnight I have one question before this goes too much further. Do you do a lot of downloading? in the 2 to 5 gigabyte per month range? if so the reason for your slow speed may be fairly simple. OOL despite it's high speed capability sets a Limit to how much you can download and/or upload per month. if that limit is reached they severely cap the connection. your connection dropping from 10 mbps to 2 mbps suddenly is a symptom of this. IF that isn't the case try this file: It's the very same one I use to support my 15/2 Roadrunner connection.
Kingknight67 Posted January 4, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 4, 2006 Yeah I do a lot of downloading, how do I check if there is a cap? This is confusing , I try all these different cablenut settings and they seem to fluctuate to like 300 Kbps to 185 Kbps, I don't see much of a difference :/
cdf216 Posted January 4, 2006 CID Share Posted January 4, 2006 that's because there's probably a hard limit set in your modem right now. were you getting speeds near 10 mbps (1250 kB/s) until recently then suddenly it went slower? only way to confirm this is to call OOL and have thenm check from their end. they'll tell you if you're capped and maybe read you the riot act about downloading too much. One reason I love my connection from RR Tampa Bay 15/2 and no limits on download or upload.

cdf216 Posted January 9, 2006 CID Share Posted January 9, 2006 it could be faster however there is a bad router in your traceroute that is probably slowing your connection to testmy. try running a speedtest here http://ciseweb100.cise-nsf.gov:7123/ and post your results. also try a traceroute to the same address and post it.
