xs1 Posted December 7, 2004 CID Share Posted December 7, 2004 My first 3 hops or so are pretty....damn high.. But as it goes along its route goes down. My question would be is is it normal to have high first hops, and if not, could it be effecting speeds like... alot or not realy.. [ hops ] http://s1pwnsyou.camaroz.net/testmy/hops.jpg the first 2 hops is your private network, if you use a wireless router ping can be high like this to first hops. Last nite i helped a guy on www.fz.se he has vdsl 9/12 Mbps and was only getting 5 Mbps up and down in full duplex. So i asked him to make a traceroute to the testserver, it was over 60 ms, hes first hop was 32 ms i i remember it right. I told him to call hes isp and let them uninstall a stabilisation filter and after that he ping 1 ms to hes first hop and was getting 8.5 Mbps in full duplex. So it has a very big impact on result. 1st hop to me is the hop between your modem and your ISP, Private network dosent count. If you can, make a traceroute direct from your modem to mindspring.com also i heard that some routers is set to not priories ICMP traffic. Mr. Hahn Posted December 7, 2004 CID Share Posted December 7, 2004 I live in Birmingham, AL, and I did a trace route to the same IP in Atlanta as .s1. I have three questions. 1) Why does it think I live in St. Louis? 2) Where does Washington D.C. come into the picture? It looks like it hits Atlanta, shoots over to D.C., and then comes right back. 3) Austin, TX? Bakersfield, CA?! wtf? -Trace Route

Cos ping plotters like these are Very Inaccurate when it comes to location of a certain router. I have seen routers located in sweden, but on a ping plotter it shows its located in US... xs1 Posted December 7, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 7, 2004 lol i have no idea. I have a friend in OHio who and it says he gets his internet from georgia. And i dotn know why it goes to washignton, but routing is crazy like that. Alot of websites i have traced will go to WA, then ALLLLLL the way to cali , just to come back to newyork , where the server is located O-o i have no idea why it has to travel that much. and vanburen, no im not ona wireless conection, im running wired, cat-5 , router settings @ max 11 mbps

VanBuren Posted December 7, 2004 CID Share Posted December 7, 2004 I ALWAYS have the most horrible pings / speeds to anythign on the " AOHELL" network Since you have the speed and 4 9 ms 10 ms 16 ms pop2-tby-P0-1.atdn.net [66.185.136.185] is very low, i think these routers below is set to not priories ICMP traffic 2 336 ms 838 ms 927 ms atm5-0-744.tampflerl-rtr2.tampabay.rr.com [24.92.7.46] 3 932 ms 798 ms 712 ms srp8-0.tampflerl-rtr4.tampabay.rr.com [65.32.8.2.28] but they still deliver your TCP and UDP packets normal. VanBuren Posted December 7, 2004 CID Share Posted December 7, 2004 Not what i know of, these plotters take location info from ARIN and RIPE databases check this thread http://www.testmy.net/forumz/viewtopic.php?t=827 VanBuren
