Mtal1ca Posted January 7, 2006 CID Share Posted January 7, 2006 Hello everyone-- My speed with my wireless laptop only half of hosts speed. Any recommendations as to what I can do to boost. Using Linksys WRT54G

compuworm Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 You do know that by going wireless you loss about 50% of your bandwidth. How new is your unit, just because you purchase it yesterday doesn't mean your NIC drivers are out of date. Whenever I purchase anything new like graphics card the first thing I do is look for new drivers. Anyway, before you can download hyperwrt firmware to increase your transmit power you really need to know what version of router you have. Try looking on the bottom of the unit. What Vanburen ccs file are you currently using to improve your TCP/IP connection? Further, once I know your version number I will send a link to the firmware that is best for your unit. Also, do you know the Linksys version of Firmware you are currently using? Thanks, compuworm
Bird Fan Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 You do know that by going wireless you loss about 50% of your bandwidth. I get the same speed on my wired computer as I get on my wireless laptop.
Mtal1ca Posted January 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 I just went to linksys and downloaded their latest firmware v. 1.00.4 the bottom of the router states WRT54G v5 Vanburen's "version 7 all win OS and sat". I used MTU 1500? wasn't sure about that one. Not exactly sure what a NIC driver is. Thanks

Bird Fan Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Let me in on that secret I dont really have a secret. Does it have the same speed when you have a better wireless signal? Do you have any security enabled?
Mtal1ca Posted January 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Haven't really noticed the difference in signal strength. No security.
Bird Fan Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Haven't really noticed the difference in signal strength. No security. Post a speed test with your wired computer and one with your wireless one. Use the same browser, and this test: http://server1.testmy.net/d_load.php?ni=1&tt=1&s=2992&st=st&ta=&top=

Bird Fan Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Keep testing. And do it from different parts of your house where you would have a different signal. Are you sure that it's any slower? It could just be the peak hour slowdowns. BTW, I get a very high speed burst on my wired computer and almost no speed burst on my wireless. The different speeds that you could be seeing might be due to a speed burst. Keep running that test, it's more accurate on my wired computer that has the huge speed bursts.
