sforce2014 Posted January 16, 2006 CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 Hi, I'm new here. I am having some trouble with my connection and can't figure out what exactly is wrong, so I've decided to come here and ask for help. Heres my problem. I have a dsl connection and I am on a router. I am running winxp with sp2. The strange thing is that my download speed on the other computers are fine, but on this one, it's very slow and it spikes. I've tested dling files from the same locations on my other computer, I was getting 150kb/s, while on this computer, I got around 20kb/s. I have the microsoft antispyware program, symantec antivirus, adaware, spybot, ccleaner. I ran them all, and there are no infected files or any spywares. I tested my upload as well, and it is perfectly fine, does not fluctuate at all. Thanks for reading heres some information: :::.. FallowEarth Posted January 16, 2006 CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 Hello and welcome, sforce2014 Trace looks pretty clean, so I would imagine that it is something on your PC Please start here and read everything: http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=2097.
sforce2014 Posted January 16, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 yea, I think there's either something on the computer, or some setting is messed up. my isp is sbcyahoo dsl, advertised speed is 1200kbps down and 256kbps up additional info: TCP properties for IP = 69.107.83.xx () Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address. TCP options string = 020405780103030201010402 MTU = 1440 MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings. MSS = 1400 MSS is not optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU value. Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 257600 RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits (scale factor of 4) Unscaled Receive Window = 64400 RWIN is a multiple of MSS Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS: 515200 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 128800 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2) 64400 (MSS x 46)

FallowEarth Posted January 16, 2006 CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 When was the last time you defragmented your harddrive? I would try the online scan at www.ewido.net Also, try the line packet loss test at http://www.dslreports.com/tools
amc11890 Posted January 16, 2006 CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 ok so the computer that is having the problem is on wireless right? If so there could be alot of things interfearing with the signal ( cordless phones, microwaves, other wireless devices)
sforce2014 Posted January 16, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 it is not a wireless router/connection, and I defrag my computer every month at the moment, I'm performing those tests that FallowEarth suggested, will get back once I finish these tests
sforce2014 Posted January 16, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 line packet loss test results: http://www.dslreports.com/quality/nil/1958126 still scanning computer with ewido
sforce2014 Posted January 16, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 finished scanning with ewido, removed a couple of spyware from newdotnet, but there seem to be no improvement even after a reboot.

FallowEarth Posted January 16, 2006 CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 i have another pc on the same network, if thats what you mean Oh yes, and you said it is fine, right? What kind of speeds are you getting on it? oh another thing i forgot to mention, i've tried changing network card and it doesn't help Yeah, changing hardware is not going to matter if the problem is software, which I'm thinking it must be. <hr> Have you tried setting the duplex of your network card to 100Mbps/Full-duplex? Your router may not support it (most do), but some ppl see speed increase when the duplex is forced instead of auto-detect, because it relies less on resources. sforce2014 Posted January 16, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 16, 2006 im dling at 150kb/s, which is 1200kbps (the advertised speed), on the other pc, and uploading at the same speed as this computer
sforce2014 Posted January 17, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 17, 2006 this is really odd, my cousin came to help me and tried out a bunch of stuff, he ended up trying a new network card, and it worked, the problem is now fixed, thanks for all the help
FallowEarth Posted January 17, 2006 CID Share Posted January 17, 2006 Cool. If that resolved it, I come to think now that it may possibly have been the duplex setting with the NIC. Glad things worked out.
