inDenial Posted February 26, 2006 CID Share Posted February 26, 2006 Alrighty, I need a little help. I purchased a wireless linksys router ( WRT54GS ) a few months ago so I could move my computer into my room as my mother did not want to run wires, I figured it would be all good and well. Since then its been a rollercoaster.. I decided to run a wire to my computer because the wireless had way to many problems. My problem is the router, If I plug my computer straight into the cable modem my speeds are 4.7+ but when I have it into the router, Im running at like 900kbs out of my 5000 plan.. I decide to try linksys chat.. No help.Next step is calling linksys, now nothing against there race but first off all of the people I can hardly understand because of there heavy indian accent. Secondly they put me on hold for ever to look up a solution to my problem.. I mean cmon can linksys not afford some trained technicians?.. I knew more than these " customer support " employees did. I have to say I am calling them atleast a few times a month, 50/50 I get helped. So my next step was coming here, Since this is where I always test out my speeds. Sorry for the new comer making a topic, Just never signed up It is odviously some setting in the linksys setup page.. Seeing as im ALWAYS sent there from there customer support, Anyone lend a hand? edit; running windows XP P.S - While I'm at it, Can someone point me out how to keep my IP the same? I always have to change the ports to open because my IP seems to always change. Thanks a ton D. Title edited by Swimmer

inDenial Posted February 26, 2006 Author CID Share Posted February 26, 2006 edit; I downloaded the dd-wrt stuff and I am very lost. Can someone explain to me where I put the files? ( I downloaded the dd-wrt.vs23.vpn.zip file in the downloads section ) .D
Swimmer Posted February 26, 2006 CID Share Posted February 26, 2006 first read this: Supported Linksys WRT54GS v1.0, v1.1, v2.0, v2.1, v3.0, v4.0 NOT SUPPORTED * NOT WRT54GS v5.0 There should be a sticker on the bottom of the router so you can find the version there.. haha not a problem.. you want the http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/index.php?path=dd-wrt.v23%2F&download=dd-wrt.v23.std.zip standard version... Then you need to unzip it.. and look at the read me file. It will tell you what version of the firmware you need to install. Then log into the router http://192.168.1.1 and just do a simple firmware upgrade. Make sure that you are on ethernet when you do this! BTW this will void your warrenty if you do decide to go this route. I love the wrt54g with the dd-wrt firmware!! so many possibilities... You can always contact me on AIM for more help. Guest philp Posted February 26, 2006 CID Share Posted February 26, 2006 It's strange that the router would slow you down that much. I use the WRT54G and have for almost 3 years now. Never had a speed issue and tested this morning with this result: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4959 Kbps about 5 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB) Download Speed is:: 605 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (main) Test Time:: Sun Feb 26 08:14:05 CST 2006 Bottom Line:: 89X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.69 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 24.72 % faster than the average for host (mindspring.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-1JONC672W I have Earthlink's 5000/384 plan. But you are right about their tech support. I have called a couple of times and had to just hang up because I simply could not understand the "technician".
