ArcticWolf Posted March 14, 2006 CID Share Posted March 14, 2006 Back in the day when I was using Win98se, I had a dns that gave me ping times of 14ms ... now I try it on Win XP sp2 and can't get under 90ms. And my first hop always goes to the same place even if I change DNS, so I'm thinking maybe I'm not doing it right, can anyone help me out? at this time I think I'm using dns servers 4.2.2.5 and 4.2.2.6 , here is my result for ping and tracert. My ISP is teksavvy, a 3/800 package. FallowEarth Posted March 15, 2006 CID Share Posted March 15, 2006 Did you just recently upgrade from 98 to XP, or was this a while ago? Are you using the same ISP and hardware? Are you living at the same place, connecting the same way as before? I'm failing to see how this is a DNS issue at this point...throw me a bone. Same place yes, but same isp no .. it is a different isp ..... but I got to say those are bad ping times, just to the first hop is 59ms .... my other isp and dns I used was much quicker.... the first hop to piero.pppoe.ca, is what is slow .... is there a way to change the first hop to another place? Still haven't been able to find a DNS server in Montreal,Canada... it would be sweet though.... I was told usually colleges and schools are given there own dns. But I believe it may be rumor. I'm not absolutely certain, but I don't think you can legally use any DNS servers you want to. That is something I would contact your ISP about. FallowEarth Posted March 20, 2006 CID Share Posted March 20, 2006 Try this reverse traceroute: http://network-tools.com/ You may need to disable your firewall for it to go through completely. Guest thecableguy Posted March 20, 2006 CID Share Posted March 20, 2006 Since many connectivity issues are eventually traced to DNS problems, you can add to, or even replace your ISP's nameservers with other public ones. A good alternative is the public DNS services from the Open Root-Server Confederation, which cover some new TLD listings that many other nameservers don't yet include. Below is a list of available ORSC DNS servers you can use (I'd choose ones that are geographically close to you): 199.166.29.3 (nl.public.rootfix.net) - Nederlands 199.166.31.3 (NS1.QUASAR.NET) - Orlando, FL, USA (the list was longer but a quick test resulted in some dead servers) the above two seem to be active Here are some more that you may want to investigate....
