misternapps Posted May 4, 2006 CID Share Posted May 4, 2006 Hi - I had comcast 3/down, and recently upgraded to 6/down (and got their cable- they are coming any minute to install the tv service). However, my line speed has really not increased, and i'm wondering if there is anything i can do to increase it. This is the result from the line test on my connection - wireless pci adapter - I had to use the flat test. [[Results :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 1242 Kbps about 1.24 Mbps (tested with 3151 kB) Download Speed is:: 152 kB/s Tested From:: http://www.bafserv.com Test Time:: 2006/05/04 - 11:54am Bottom Line:: 22X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 6.74 sec Tested from a 3151 kB file and took 20.781 seconds to complete Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; InfoPath.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 24.88 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-IS65P9GLZ ]]] I pay for comcast 6down, and know the wireless pci causes significant loss in speed (especially since it is AT&T pci adapter, total trash) albeit my hardwired computer, (I unplugged the router and conected directly to the modem) will not exceed ~4.2mpbs. I have a modem that is probably 2 years old, branded comcast (WebSTAR DPC2100) and am wondering if the speed lost is from my end, due to the modem not being capable of these speeds, or if it is due to the actual line itself. I'm thinking about upgrading to the Surfboard SB5120, and wondering if there are suggestions? Interestingly enough, I've run the NDT test thru nitro.ucsc.edu to check for duplex mismatches, but everything seems to check out ok - and my speeds appear much higher there on my pci adapter. I'll post up my results here. Note that all values are for the wireless computer (802.11b/g AT&T PCI adapter!) ------ Web100 Detailed Analysis ------ Cable modem/DSL/T1 link found. misternapps Posted May 4, 2006 Author CID Share Posted May 4, 2006 thanks VB.. my speeds still arent at the advertisted 6mb/s, but increased from 3.2 to 4.2 on nitro, 2.9 to 4.1 on speakeasy. not bad, considering my adapter is not very good! Thanks
Guest echo Posted May 5, 2006 CID Share Posted May 5, 2006 I would upgrade to the motorola surfboard modem. I have the Comcast 6Mbps as well with the motorola surfboard and i get anywhere from 6.2Mbps to 6.4Mbps without any tweaks. inface, tweaks don't do anything at all for me...i guess since i am actually getting faster speeds then i pay for. You should be able to take your old modem up to a Comcast center in your area and do a straight up trade as long as you are "renting" the modem from them ($3 a month). If that doesn't work then I would have them check the lines and especially the drop (from the pole to your house). The drop is where most problems are... Like you said, you will see a significant drop is speed if you are using WiFi.....I get 5.1mbps with my wifi laptop (with intel built-in centrino wireless modem)
ballista Posted May 5, 2006 CID Share Posted May 5, 2006 I also have Comcast 6meg and I've had to have Comcast out several times to fix the drop and they even had to move it twice. And I have the Surfboard SB5120 since I got that no problems in speed whatsoever. Just a few connection Interrupts in COD2 which Comcast has yet to fix. :::.. ballista Posted May 5, 2006 CID Share Posted May 5, 2006 wOOt I just upgraded to gamer package and this is the results. Also make Comcast get out there and check your drop that is most likely the problem or they haven't changed your service like they said. :::.. Guest echo Posted May 5, 2006 CID Share Posted May 5, 2006 you should be able to pull a bit more out of that. my friend just upgraded to the 8mbps package (gamer package as you called it) and after tweaking it he pulled off a 10.1mbps...and yes, all the cache was cleared. It did it twice. Iono, we are gonna do it again today to see if maybe it was just a mistake.
ballista Posted May 5, 2006 CID Share Posted May 5, 2006 I believe I'll just leave it alone for now see how I like it if I need more I may tweak it some.
