asubaseball727 Posted May 12, 2006 CID Share Posted May 12, 2006 I purposely bought the older version so it didn't have the new, crappy firmware, but from what I hear the 3rd party is much better. I was wondering what fimrware You guys are using/where to get it, and also if I'd just install it normally thruough the linksys firmware update deal. Thanks a lot
Swimmer Posted May 12, 2006 CID Share Posted May 12, 2006 I love it.. no problem.. yes.. there is a guide, http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-12222 , on how to do it.. It is more stable and give you tons more options with what you can do with it. I use the DD-WRT version.. there are a few other but some of them cost money and are harder to install.. requiring a sftp install..
brock01 Posted May 12, 2006 CID Share Posted May 12, 2006 ya dd-wrt ftw been using it for a couple of months, with TONS of bt activity, router has shut down since the dd-wrt
Swimmer Posted May 12, 2006 CID Share Posted May 12, 2006 yeah.. the current version on the linksys router has problems with bt traffic.. which can lead to an unstable router.. see here
asubaseball727 Posted May 12, 2006 Author CID Share Posted May 12, 2006 A little question with the guide. http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=9209&start=0 There they say I can run 3rd party firmware, but the guide says any v5. So I don't know which is right. Can you specify?
Swimmer Posted May 13, 2006 CID Share Posted May 13, 2006 it is now possible to run on v5.. but you have to build a special cable and flash with the mini version.. and it is a hell of a lot harder.. http://wrt-wiki.bsr-clan.de/index.php?title=Flash_Your_Version_5_WRT54G

brock01 Posted May 13, 2006 CID Share Posted May 13, 2006 i just set up the wds deal on linksys wrt54g with dd-wrt i dont know if its a placebo affect, but it seems faster
richcornucopia Posted May 13, 2006 CID Share Posted May 13, 2006 Mine definately got faster as far as network speeds once I overclocked my router. (yes you can overclock your router)
brock01 Posted May 13, 2006 CID Share Posted May 13, 2006 hey swimmer what settings you change to overclock wrt54g on dd-wrt firmware? and swimmer are you 100% positive that you cant wds with one router, and have a diff router that they have to be the same? so im asking do they HAVE to be the same router to link em
Swimmer Posted May 13, 2006 CID Share Posted May 13, 2006 hey swimmer what settings you change to overclock wrt54g on dd-wrt firmware? You can raise the transmit power on the router to boost range.. that is about all of the "overclocking" you can really do.. However, with the increase in power through the radio.. you need to watch the heat that is produced. Many have installed fans to combat it.. I have yet to really play with the power settings.. swimmer are you 100% positive that you cant wds with one router, and have a diff router that they have to be the same? so im asking do they HAVE to be the same router to link em I am 99.9% positive that you have to have the same router to do WDS.. I have tired with a Dlink router and my dd-wrt and it didnt work out.. as far as I know WDS is a not a standard meaning that each manufacture can offer it but it doenst have to play fair with the other manufactures gear.. I will look into it if you are intersted.. But again I think it needs to be DD-WRT to DD-WRT..

Swimmer Posted May 14, 2006 CID Share Posted May 14, 2006 ahh.. you have v.23Sp1 installed? I am still running the original v.23 firmware.. That should help if your network needs a lot of routing or if you are running some of the more advanced features such as VoIP..
