ISP Database Project Suggestions/Ideas

Recommended Posts

This is you, the members, official place to give the development team ideas and general thoughts about the ISP Database project.

History of the project:

The project was actually a recommendation via PM a while back, about 8-10 months ago.  Progress was made but the implementation was half-assed and in general didn't turn out the way that I wanted.  You can view the Beta v.1 here .

Goals of the project:

The reason that we are deciding to undertake such a project is for the information.  Back when this forum was 2,000 member old the type of questions were mainly extremely technical.  As the forum has advanced/evolved the need for a location of this type of information is needed.  (Plus it is cool)

Second as many of you know.. unless you are on the mod team you don't really get to see the latest and greatest version of the site or even what is under development.  The idea behind this project is to open it up to the entire 40,000+ members of this forum to work on and for them to see it progresses.  This way the member have some control of where this site and project goes.  Plus the mod team doesn't have a exact list of all of the ISP's in the world.

You say that we are all involved.. But how?

We plan to make the beta site available for our members to test and critique.  If there are any updates that day one of the mods will post and let you know.  I am still thinking of a way to recognize all of those involved.  I am sure that we will figure out something so that you get some credit for your efforts.

How can I help?

The first phase of the project is going to be idea generation..  If you have ideas on what you want the site to look like, the information on the site, or how it is presented POST HERE!  Also we want everyone to take pride in this project!  Tell you buddies what is going on and tell them to check out the site.

If you want to help some other way either PM, IM, or email me.  I will try to get back ASAP.

a fairly advanced goal for the site would be a database searchable by zipcode/address to locate available isps for a given area. this might require some cooperation from the actual isps as they would be the ones able to provide accurate coverage information.

Alright I have found a way to implement that...  Basically a if an ISP offers any package and you enter your zipcode that package will come up as a possibility.  It is going to be based on what is offered in the state and not necessarily based on what is available.
