wingzero2309 Posted February 12, 2005 CID Share Posted February 12, 2005 I have a wireless router, and i am currently not using the WEP key stuff, but rather im just restricting access so that only the computers i own can use the connection. Is there any advantage of using WEP over restricting access (based on MAC address)?
Swimmer Posted February 12, 2005 CID Share Posted February 12, 2005 yeah.. wep encripts the packets.. so if your credit card is being transmitted with out wep some one with a packet sniffer can pick it up.. plus cloning a mac address isnt that hard.. I would recommend running both!
just- Posted February 12, 2005 CID Share Posted February 12, 2005 yeap cloning a mac is not difficult at all window or lunix or whatever, wep is still needed even if u only give access to the mac add you want to as Swimmer said encrypt i dont think anyone would be intrested in cracking ur encryption key if u use 128 bit one would be to hard i dont even know if it is possible
wingzero2309 Posted February 13, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 13, 2005 wow i've been leaving my computer and sisters computer unsecure all this time and didnt even know it! good thing that all the people on our street dont seem like the computer-types *goes to turn on WEP*
Swimmer Posted February 13, 2005 CID Share Posted February 13, 2005 WEP 10-15 sec to crack.. you have to dual boot linux then you can sniff for it.. WPA=hard if not impossible.. WEP was cracked a long time ago!!! the only thing that really sucks is that with WEP the speed will drop to the client.. 128 should be suffecent.. The time est. was based on heavy wireless usage.. JUST A NOTE ABOUT THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION!!! CRACKING THE WIRELESS PROTECTION ON SOMEONE ELSES ROUTER IS AGAINST THE LAW! I DONT RECOMMEND TRYING IT UNLESS IT IS ON YOUR OWN HARDWARE! Here is what I was talking about.. you would have to install a UNIX based os.. so like linux or BSD https://sourceforge.net/projects/wepcrack/ It exploits the weakness in the WEP code.. fun stuff but it can get you into trouble! wingzero2309 Posted February 13, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 13, 2005 okay so do you reccomend me using the WPA option instead of WEP? also, what exactly does the group key renewal mean for the WPA? how much should i make it? Swimmer Posted February 13, 2005 CID Share Posted February 13, 2005 it means how often will the key be valicated.. I have my AP set to re-authenticate every user every 30 minutes. Re-authentication produces a new Pairwise Transient Key (PTK) for the user. The Group Transient Key (GTK) is also set to update every 30 minutes. so it basically makes sure that each of the clients are who they really say they are.. I would leave it to how it is set right now..
wingzero2309 Posted February 13, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 13, 2005 turns out that i cant use WPA because when i try to get the computer to connect to it (the one connecting wirelessly) it doenst ever connect, so i was forced to go back to WEP i guess i'll try wpa again later wen i dont have anything to do
