VanBuren Posted February 16, 2005 CID Share Posted February 16, 2005 hey Nos7667 and welcome to the forum ppl testing when they have a problem with their connection and also alot of ppl choose not to tweak it, thats probl why the average is low EDIT: here is the average "Comcast.net Download Average = 3273 Kbps :: 400 KB/sec --- 53775 records found (30 days of logs) " what is your cap? Nos7667 Posted February 17, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 17, 2005 Im not quite sure what my cap is. Probably the same as most people. I did another test today and i got 4.1 Mbps. Ive seen some people around my area with the same provider who get around 5 Mbps. So i was just wondering if there is anytihng i could do to get even faster. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4139 Kbps about 4.1 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB) Download Speed is:: 505 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Thu Feb 17 08:48:00 EST 2005 Bottom Line:: 74X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.03 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 33.52 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/id-S8EL5T3J4

VanBuren Posted February 17, 2005 CID Share Posted February 17, 2005 When you need help with tweaking then add these things in your post. 1. What OS are you running, ex win 98, win xp, if you have XP make sure you have SP2 installed! Also download the p2p fix for SP2 here https://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497 If you have a MAC try this program http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12591 2. What service do you have, what is the advertised speed for download/upload. 3. What tweakprograms you already got installed, and run this test http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks copy and paste result URL adress in your post! 4. What speed do you have against www.testmy.net and http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ also make a tracert, go to start-run type command and hit enter, type tracert testmy.net and hit enter, right click copy all and paste it in your post. 5. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need. 6. Open Internet Explorer and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure nothing there is checked. 7. Connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it depend on the ISP service unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL. If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware. 8. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 30 seconds. 9. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot http://beam.to/spybotsd and Ad Aware http://www.lavasoft.com/support/download to remove any spyware 10. ZoneAlarm firewall has known problems with dropping speed, i suggest to uninstall it and compare speed 11. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/ 12. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one, AVG is great http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php 13. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates 14. Download and run CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ 15. download and install Cablenut 4.08 and Vanburens cablenut settings version 4 here https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1013.0 unzip settings to C:ProgramCablenut
cmarkmyers Posted February 17, 2005 CID Share Posted February 17, 2005 I read on Comcast's site that they are increasing most of their residential service from 3.0 to 4.0... Does that have something to do with your increased speed?
MMcmahon Posted April 2, 2005 CID Share Posted April 2, 2005 VanBuren - I'm also a Comcast.net user looking to maximize my up and down transfer rates and I took a look at your CableNut configuration file and wanted to ask a question: One thing that I've heard consistently is that setting the RWIN too high can be counterproductive. MMcmahon Posted April 2, 2005 CID Share Posted April 2, 2005 VanBuren - Many thanks for the clarifications - I'll go thru using CableNut and do some manual 'tweaking' in addition to your provided configuration files. At least for the time being, I'm finding a transfer rate that's closer to Comcast's throttled maximum values using the 67160 RWIN value...I'll do some more reading but, given the hour, it won't be tonight. By the way, DSLReports actually DOES provide an RWIN calculator...I've been using it for some time with good results: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/677 It sounds like you've got a LOT of experience with CableNut - given the suggested values that (at least for now) appear to be working well, are there other areas where some of the higher values should be adjusted? Thanks again for the in-depth explanation, I had no idea that XP SP2 made so many radical changes to the IP stack functionality. Color me one of the CableNut converted.
