  1. Unless the problem is obvious I doubt the tech will do much. The first thing he will probably do is test the line. Then he may install an amplifier and/or give you a dedicated line and hopefully one of those will fix your problem.
  2. Uhh, wingzero that link is not about a true suicide. It is a joke. Satire to be exact (I think).
  3. Glad to hear you rent and burn games. Games are not expensive enough now, lets all pirate more to drive up the price for everyone else.
  4. I have a router. I cannot find any way to change or even check the settings but I did a test on dslreports.com and if I read it right my MTU is indeed at 1500. However, even when I plug the modem directly into the PC or Xbox my poor performance continues.
  5. After much frustration with Verizon never being able to fix my provisioning I switched to Comcast about 3 or 4 months ago, thinking that with their better speeds I would have a better online experience gaming and surfing the web. The web is fine (almost). Speeds are good. The only problem I have is frequent "Page not found" errors. This only seems to happen with certain web sites (mainly Yahoo, which I primarily use for searching, mail, and news). Usually if I just refresh it comes up right away. The second and more annoying problem is terrible performance when gaming. My 4.0/384 connection should be fine for Xbox Live but it is not. 90% of the time I have the worst lag/latency/ping when playing, even though my connection is as good as or better than many of the people I play with. I should say used to play with, as I have given up since it has become unplayable. Comcast has been called about 8 times, and all of those times but 2 they said there were no problems and nothing they could to do help. Last week they said they saw some line issues and sent a tech to give me a dedicated line to my apartment. The result? No change. I called today and the customer service representative said she saw some line problems and would send someone to boost my signal. After explaining that had already been done I told her to forget it while I looked for other options. However, 30 minutes later I changed my mind and called back and this time the rep said there were no problems and as such he could not send out a tech. After 20 minutes of arguing and asking to speak with a supervisor he relented. Still, I am positive this will not help anything. Anywho, has anyone else in VA (or any area) experienced problems such as these?
  6. Interesting... The link said it is available in my area when I put in my address but when I put in my phone number on the page with the price list it said it was not available :/
  7. I tried that one and never got it to work. Any other suggestions?
  8. I have been having problems with my connection when gaming, even though every time I test my speed here things look great. I did a search on bandwidth monitors but I did not find exactly what I was looking for. I am hoping to find a program that will monitor and log my connections speed (up and down) over a period of time, so I can see if spikes of poor service occur. Is there anything out there that fits my needs?
  9. We all understand that everyone is at the mercy of the host with Halo 2. What I don't understand is why my connection is worse than others when my connection speed is as good or better than theirs. The only thing that I have not replaced is the patch cable from the modem to the Xbox, so I think I may as well give that a shot.
  10. I did a google search for the IP address of the Xbox Live servers and had no luck. I am not 100% sure of the Xbox Live architecture, but I do know that Halo 2 games are played in something of a peer-to-peer format. One person's Xbox is the host; there is no actual gaming server for this particular game. I am sure there are servers invloved - The Halo manufacturers servers keep track of stats and do the in game matchmaking (where you get paired up with other online players of similar skill levels) and I am sure the Xbox Live servers are also involved in some manner.

  12. I don't even have my PC hooked up to the Internet when I play. I am plugging the cable modem directly into my Xbox, bypassing my router and PC.
  13. I have Comcast Cable 4.0/384 and when I test my speeds here I consistently get about what I should. For reference, here are the latest tests: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4032 Kbps about 4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 492 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Thu May 5 12:28:31 EDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 72X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.08 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 13 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-JBM3VR6OU :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 378 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Upload Speed is:: 46 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Thu May 5 12:29:56 EDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 7X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 22.26 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 11.5 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-FUBJ54AV9 Despite these good speeds, I always have problems when playing Xbox Live (Microsoft Xbox's online gaming service). My connection is as good as or even better than most people I play with, but I suffer greatly from lag/latency issues. Since first experiencing these problems I have... Changed my Xbox (I have 2) Changed my ISP from Verizon DSL to Comcast Cable (the Comcast is significantly faster) Bypassed my router and plugged my cable modem (a Motorola from Comcast) directly into the game console The only thing I have not done that I can think of is replace the Ethernet cord from the Xbox to the modem. But I have no idea if/how/why that would do anything different. So does anyone have any thoughts as to why I am having such problems?
  14. Even so, when I had Verizon I always was much, much closer to the advertised speed. I would think he would be closer to 2.8 at least. Especially since he is almost spot on with the advertised upload speed. But you are the expert
  15. Those upload stats look great too, especially if you are a gamer. I loved the consistency with Verizon when I had them. But they seem to have very poor customer service when there are problems. Still, if they could have fixed what they had me partitioned at I would still be with them rather than cable, despite cable's faster DL speeds.
  16. Other than the down time I have with Comcast I love my cable Internet. Enjoy Oh yeah, excellent avatar pic
  17. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4075 Kbps about 4.1 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 497 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Thu Apr 21 14:58:07 EDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 73X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.06 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 20.99 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-7B10XLFOV :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 377 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Upload Speed is:: 46 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Thu Apr 21 14:59:55 EDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 7X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 22.26 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 12.87 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-WGFLY68CO That is my best upload yet, and an average download. I have gotten 5.1 down a couple of times for no reason, and as low as 2.7 and 3.1 other times. But the 4.1 is pretty damn consistent. Oh, I have the 4.0 / 384 plan.
  18. What problems are you experiencing? It seems like every day my Comcast connection goes away or gets extremely poor and it does seem like a DNS error as I can still ping addresses but I cannot surf the web.
  19. I like the speed of Comcast, although if Verizon was not so clueless I would go with a bit less speed for a cheaper price. My problem with Comcast is the frequent hic-ups in service. Nearly every day there is at least one random 30 minute window with no or very poor service.
  20. I am sorry, but letting her starve was wrong? Cruel? It was a painful way to go? Give me a break, she COULD NOT FEEL ANYTHING!
  21. You did not tell us what plan you have from Verizon. If you have their 3.0 DL plan then something is seriously wrong. If you have thier 784 plan then you should be joyous. But like the guy above said, you probably have the 1.5 plan, so you are only a bit down. Still, you should be able to get 90% of that 1.5, which would put you a bit faster. So make sure you go into the help forums here and do everything mentioned. Also, call Verizon to check out your plan (if you are unsure) and to have them do a line check if something is amiss.
  22. Verizon DSL is gone, Cable is here
  23. So we can assume that a properly set up new system with a brand new high-speed connection is automatically optimized? How naive is that? Is a car fresh off the factory floor better in stock form than if it was tweaked? Will a brand new TV look better with the factory settings or after a certified technician adjusts it? Does a video card perform best fresh out of the box with no tweaks or adjustments? Come to think of it I cannot think of anything remotely complex that performs at its peak without any adjustments. But really, it was very cool of you to go out of your way to come here to insult someone that devotes countless hours of his time helping people with their Internet woes. Wait, I thought of another example. You came out of your mother
  24. Today is the 8th day since I discovered that Verizon had me provisioned at 1/2 what they should have, and still no resolution. 5 calls and about 5 to 6 hours on the phone with them has brought no resolution. On my last call (other than the one I am on hold for now) I went online to Comcast's website and ordered their cable internet service. I must say I could not be more disappointed at how Verizon has failed to handle this, and at this point I am willing to pay the extra 13 bucks per month for Cable (Verizon did offer me a $5 break per month and 1 free month for my troubles, but what good is that when I am still getting 1/2 the download speed and 1/3 the upload that I had originally agreed to?). I will miss the reliability of DSL (my phone never goes out, but cable seems to go out once per month) but what can you do?
