tan Posted February 5, 2009 CID Share Posted February 5, 2009 Hello, I new here and had my pc tested and have pasted the results below: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 152 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 512 kB) Download Speed is:: 19 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Main) Test Time:: 2009/02/04 - 6:56pm Bottom Line:: 3X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 53.89 sec Tested from a 512 kB file and took 27.599 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: May need help : running at only 2.4 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-B7USCZOTF User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; GTB5; .NET CLR 2.0.50727) [!] I use a wireless laptop with a linksys wireless router hooked into the cable modem in another room. I do get a low and very weak link on my laptop. My router is about 7 to 8 years old but my card in the laptop is newer.(about a year old). I'm wondering if this is why my connection is not up to what it should be with using cable internet?? Maybe I need to get a newer router? Thanks to all who can help me. tommie gorman Posted February 5, 2009 CID Share Posted February 5, 2009 In order to test the router simply take it out of the way. Directly hook the computer to the modem without the router in between, if the speeds improve then the router is part of the problem.
tan Posted February 8, 2009 Author CID Share Posted February 8, 2009 Thanks so much! Yep, was the router. I hadn't even thought of doing that. dah Now off to check on a newer router. Thanks again!
iced98lx Posted February 9, 2009 CID Share Posted February 9, 2009 You're always going to see a slight speed drop across wifi, even with draft N at 300mbps I loose about 1mb of download off my normal wired score of 12, not sure the throughput issue but over sustained downloads the speed seems good (If I do a 100mb file It gets righto 11.6 or so..). It does sound like you're in need of some better equipment, check and see what your card supports and get a new router! If you've got the extra bank I'd just jump for a multiband (A/B/G/dN) now and have future upgrades covered. (most people laugh off A but it can be really useful in a crowded apartment building etc etc).
tan Posted February 10, 2009 Author CID Share Posted February 10, 2009 I bought a new wireless Linksys 54GS router and had a really hard time setting it up. Real bad cd software, not at all easy like the other one I had. I finally had to get customer support to figure it out. Their "quick start" guide is poor to say the least. I will say though after getting it finally set up and doing a couple things to my windows xp settings, it has gotten a lot better! Here's what my speed tested now: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Download Connection is:: 10809 Kbps about 10.8 Mbps (tested with 12288 kB) Download Speed is:: 1319 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (Main) Test Time:: 2009/02/10 - 5:29pm Bottom Line:: 188X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 0.78 sec Tested from a 12288 kB file and took 9.313 seconds to complete Download Diagnosis:: Awesome! 20% + : 70.14 % faster than the average for host (comcast.net) D-Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-IDYRQJ67F User Agent:: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; GTB5; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30) [!] I want to thank you guys for helping me with this!
