BuffaloPhil Posted January 3, 2022 CID Share Posted January 3, 2022 Hi, hope someone can help. I have Virgin broadband advertised at 100Mbps, and I mostly seem to get that. My phone is getting at least that on both Ookla and testmy.net, and my laptop is getting it on Ookla but only about 20Mbps on testmy.net and the default speedtest that comes up in Chrome when I search "speedtest" The reason I started looking into it is because I was freezing up on Zoom calls (which I shouldn't be if I'm getting the advertised speeds, even if I'm streaming on my TV at the same time) and so the lower speed seems to tally with that. But I don't understand why the Ookla test would show so much faster, and why my phone seems fine on both. I'm not very tech-savvy so if anyone could explain or give me some tips in plain English I'd greatly appreciate it!! Many thanks in advance. Pgoodwin1 Posted January 5, 2022 CID Share Posted January 5, 2022 Ookla tests may be connecting to a nearby test server. They also throw out data. Assuming you’ve picked the TestMy test server closest to you, it’s giving you a real indication of what is happening to your data between you and that TestMy test server. This may be why you’re seeing Zoom call lags while the Ookla test show you’re good. you can try different test servers on TestMy to see how your results vary. You can also run some latency tests here on TestMy to different test servers to see the delays.
