Root2k Posted August 24, 2004 CID Share Posted August 24, 2004 I am a subscriber of the new Comcast 4000/384 tier and the download speed sucks. I have a Scientific Atlanta Webstar DPX110 modem connected to a hardware gateway pc running smoothwall. I've run all the spyware proggies and disabled XP's firewall. Here are my speedtest scores : :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2753 Kbps about 2.8 Mbps (tested with 1013 KB) Download Speed is:: 336 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 49 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3.05 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=2Q5KIF874 Any suggestions would be great, and let me know if you need more info it's my first post

Root2k Posted August 24, 2004 Author CID Share Posted August 24, 2004 what do you reccommend I use, i have several nortel networks switches and a cisco 2600 router which i sadly havn't learned how to setup correctly yet. Should I just use Zone Alarm pro?
Root2k Posted August 24, 2004 Author CID Share Posted August 24, 2004 Update: I have run TCPOptimizer which helped in the FTP test tremendously, it is showing a steady 4.3mbps in netpersec. But in all other speed test iit's still way below par. Now I know i should take all web based tests with a grain of salt but why don't these scores reflect my actual download speeds. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2334 Kbps about 2.3 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is:: 285 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 42 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3.59 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=OJIC8FN69
Swimmer Posted August 24, 2004 CID Share Posted August 24, 2004 umm... try this... remove the smoothwall system from the network.. Connect to the router and the to the switches... If the speed doesnt improve then make sure that the router and switches are setup correctly... If you dont want to go through all of this try updating your drivers and make sure that you dont have something stupid like 10mbs instead of 100mbs enabled... Root2k Posted August 24, 2004 Author CID Share Posted August 24, 2004 Thanks Swimmer I'll try that now, the smoothwall machine is an old crappy IBM box so that's probably holding me back. Also which type firewall do you reccommend?
BOA_ELF Posted August 25, 2004 CID Share Posted August 25, 2004 Well as a comcast customer myself with the 4000k/384k upload I must say that I have been lucky. So far I run Zone alarm pro Firewall with AVG anti-virus here are my results with both running :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 3771 Kbps about 3.8 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is:: 460 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 67 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.23 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=GOB5IO3X2 :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is: 433 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 579 KB) Upload Speed is: 53 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line: 8 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 19.32 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=XJRUA377Q the one thing I would suggest is to run the tweak tester from broadband reports and do any recomndations from that I had switched from SDSL to comcast and had same problem as you until I changed my recieve window TCP optimizer seemed to set the recieve window to high for me and actually slowed my connection down the other test you might want to run is a line quality test from dsl reports and the ping test as this may be something to do with the lines and not neccisarily your set up
Swimmer Posted August 25, 2004 CID Share Posted August 25, 2004 if you are in a business environment then you are going to need something a little bit beefer than zone alarm... I would recommend Nortan Internet Security... That seems to be the standard in the business world and does a good job... The only thing is that it does tend to be a memory hog and does slow the computer down slightly.... If you are designing stuff on CAD or something I would recommend not installing it on those machines... Of course you can get a red box which is a hardware firewall... you are looking between $1000-10,000 for one..
Root2k Posted August 25, 2004 Author CID Share Posted August 25, 2004 no business environment Swimmer just my good ol' home network. I definately want to get rid of the linux smoothwall box but I don't have another hardware router and the cisco router i have doesn't have enouth fast ethernet ports to setup on my network. I ran tcp optimizer and my receive window is 256960, BOA_ELF how much did you back yours down because i did notice that browsing last night was slow. Swimmer Posted August 25, 2004 CID Share Posted August 25, 2004 zone alarm should work for you... try it out and if you like it upgrade to the pro-version...
BOA_ELF Posted August 26, 2004 CID Share Posted August 26, 2004 by going to DSL reports and using the tweak test I brought mine back to 100,000 If you are on Comcast homenetworking package why not get there Linksys router that comes with the package and run wireless
Root2k Posted August 27, 2004 Author CID Share Posted August 27, 2004 there has got to be something bottlenecking my connection on my network, here are my speeds with the modem connected to just one pc :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 3719 Kbps about 3.7 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is:: 454 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 66 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.26 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=W2SVKUKBT that is without running tcp optimizer. Swimmer Posted September 20, 2004 CID Share Posted September 20, 2004 it is a useful firewall program that if used correctly can provide really good security.. However, it does tend to lower bandwidth... if you are interested here you go..http://www.smoothwall.org/
