My Speeds

Well Van,

I tried the tweaks, but it doesn't want to get much faster than what it is now. As a matter of fact, the small TCPRWIN causes my bandwidth to decrease by almost 5 Mbps.... It's currently set at 513920 as per the SG TCP Optimizer's "Exterme" setting.

My tests vary, but mostly are between 15.5 Mbps - 18 Mbps (Last night I did actually get a 27.5 Mbps score.)... and alot of the runs are "off the scale" and I get the error about the 30000 kbps cap. I believe this is due to the file not being big enough for very highspeed connections...

When d/loading large files, I seem to be consistantly between 1.5 MB/sec and 1.8MB/sec, but I must say, it's hard to find a download server that will consistantly give me speeds like that and keep them up....

If you have anymore ideas, or opinions, please let me know.. and thanks.. :D

cool :) and ty for the info, i know BIG TcpWindowSize give you "full trottle" but the thing thats bugging me is that it can impact bad on upload. You have to use windows scaling if TcpWindowSize is above 65535 and when you get packetloss with that you will loose alot of speed.

Thats probl why your result vary alot, if you got time it would be nice to see how your upload works with that settings and compare it with my tweak.

you could try a test from my server, which is in the same data center as testmy...

http://www.luwigie.com/tests

edit: download.microsoft.com is pretty speedy... Try to download SP2 redist from there (222 megs), and kernel.org is on gigabit from ISC, so it should be able to keep up as well...

Ok.. here's a screenshot of my downloading the 128M test....

test128.jpg

Never seems to drop below 1.4 MB/sec on that one.... I like it... :)

Van......

With the current settings, her's my u/load speed... it's about 1/3 of what I get on D/load...

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::

Connection is: 5084 Kbps about 5.1 Mbps (tested with 1013 KB)

Upload Speed is: 621 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line: 91 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 1.65 second(s)

Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=NEYPN1N33

Now.. interesting thing is... when I go to http://dfw.speakeasy.net,'>http://dfw.speakeasy.net, it's more in-line with my d/load speed... check it out...

2004-09-22 18:02:55 EST: 11756 / 8479

Your download speed : 12038208 bps, or 11756 kbps.

A 1469.5 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 8683068 bps, or 8479 kbps.

the variations may also have to do with how the entire office complex shares this connection with me, so I get what's available at the time... dunno... regardless, I'm lovin it.... ;) This is going to make me stay late at work all the time.. lol

EDIT ---------------

Here are the scores with your 100Mbps tweak...

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 10878 Kbps about 10.9 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)

Download Speed is:: 1328 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 194 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 0.77 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=244W2LJAI

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::

Connection is: 5115 Kbps about 5.1 Mbps (tested with 1013 KB)

Upload Speed is: 624 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line: 91 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 1.64 second(s)

Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=WCK7RKGAC

http://dfw.speakeasy.net

2004-09-22 18:20:44 EST: 8913 / 8358

Your download speed : 9127168 bps, or 8913 kbps.

A 1114.1 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 8559201 bps, or 8358 kbps.

Upload stayed about the same... so it looks like I'll go back to the larger window size I guess....

Another strange thing I noticed, is that when I go to SG analyzer page, it shows my MTU as 1420 and my MSS as 1380 no matter what I have it set to on my machine... anyone know why this would be?

I compared my tweak with TCP optimizer overseas against your test luwigie, what i found out is that with my tweak the speed was the almost the same during whole time, but with TCP Optimizer it was changing alot.

I was using the Cable settings in TCP optimizer, the Extream would just give me more packetloss.

i made ss of both downloads at 50%

My tweaks

mytweaks.jpg

TCP optimizer

TCPoptimizertweaks.jpg

Conclusion, there is no bigdiff in my tweak and TCP optimizer overseas with my type of connection.

Atleast not for download, im kinda sure my upload would do better with my tweaks, compared to TCP optimizer.

So i compared upload against Toast server http://www.toledorocket.com/perftest/uploadtest/fileselect.asp

The result page didnt work for me both test but it was uploading so i took a ss instead of datarate, i was uploading a 20 MB file both times

TCP optimizer

upload_toast_tcpoptimizer.jpg

My tweaks

upload_toast_mytweak.jpg

Conclusion, my tweak was faster and even faster on small testfile size check the boost up to 512 KB/s.

I did some more testing with the RWIN setting... and it seems that with the connection @ my office, the best setting is in fact 513920 due to the capacity of the connection (Four DS3's shared with the rest of the office complex which consists of about 12 other companies). Smaller RWIN settings will decrease both the upload and download speeds pretty drastically, and larger settings will decrease the upload speed, but not so much the d/load speed...

At times when network traffic is low, I get some pretty high speeds though.. see below...

blazin.jpg

I'm at home now, so I don't have the results handy to post, but I may log on remotely and get them, or post them tomorrow... I can tell you that with the current settings, I'm consistantly around 15 Mbps / 5 Mbps according to testmy.net and according to speakeasy.net it's about 12 Mbps/9 Mbps consistantly (Not factoring in overhead)... So for now I think I will leave it as is untill I do some more reading.

Thanks for all the advice though... I appreciate it.

i heard cox people are getting 4mbits down for only 40 bucks a month....

unfortunately, im stuck with RR, wich is $45/month, and i dont get anywhere near 4mbits....

RR has some premium version of it, but its $80/month, for 6mbits down

:::.. Upload Stats ..:::

Connection is: 350 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 1013 KB)

Upload Speed is: 43 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line: 6 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 23.81 second(s)

Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=NMD97JTVW

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 2919 Kbps about 2.9 Mbps (tested with 1013 KB)

Download Speed is:: 356 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 52 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.88 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=1LM69C1TL

i wish RR would up the dl speed....and ul too, but more dl :)

Not bad at all ... looks like you get about what is quotted

Not as lucky as us who pay for 4Mbps and get almost 5Mbps --- but still good :-)

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 4785 Kbps about 4.8 Mbps (tested with 2992 KB)

Download Speed is:: 584 KB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Bottom Line:: 85 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 1.75 second(s)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=E9IFI6U9P

Or those of us who pay for 5mb/s, and get over 9mb/s ;)
