Swimmer Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 you might want to be careful about "Switching" between the two.. If you neighbor says it is ok than great you are golden.. however law enforcement has been cracking down lately to bandwidth leachers and people who are connecting to access points that they shouldnt be on.. The only thing that I could think of would be the quality of the phone line in the house or even the service providors signal.. He also might be paying a hell of alot more than you are for the extra speed.
amc11890 Posted August 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 Yeah...........i have decided to stick with verizon dsl since i dont wanna mess with my neighbors connection. Although road runner is much faster and very tempting to switch but i dont wanna do anything ilegal Does it significanlty slow their connection when i use their isp??...........Just wonderin
Swimmer Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 If you are just stufing... They wouldnt be able to tell the difference.. However, if you were download 5 distros of linux and the lastest game demo... yeah they could tell..
amc11890 Posted August 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 Good to know....the only reason i would probably use road runner would be to download large game demos kuz download speed are bout 3 times faster...........but i guess i can deal with dsl speeds kuz they arent too bad compared to dialup which is wat i used to have. seem normal: :::.. Swimmer Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 now a days it is faster to go to the library and look up the information for your self instead of waiting for some webpage that has been built around broadband internet to load.. Anything is better than dialup..
dlewis23 Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 amc11890 don't worry about using others peoples internet wirelessly, its not illegal. The FCC states that if you can capture a wireless transmeted signal with out breaking any encryption, you can use it. If you break the encryption like WEP or WPA to use it, then they can arrest you. But there chances of catching you are 1 and a billion. And you can make it virtually imposable by Turing off client for microsoft networks, file and print sharing for microsoft networks, and QoS packet scheduler. and just to let you know i am using someone else's internet to write this. Swimmer Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 amc11890 don't worry about using others peoples internet wirelessly, its not illegal. http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/07/06/0217252&from=rss http://www.boinGBoing.net/2005/07/07/florida_man_arrested.html Maybe you should read that.. And yes it is illegal... Plus it isnt that hard to prove.. routers log mac address, request for ip releases, and connection times/packets sent recieved. print that and you have won the case. There was also someone arrested in Europe for the same thing.. Being caught pretty low.. since just about no one check their router logs.. hack mine.. see ya in 3 years.. it is a 3rd degree felony.. I would love the see the FCC doc that says this is legal to capture wireless internet data from an AP.
DJVageli Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 Is it true, that if you encrypt your router and also shut off its wireless capabilities,no one else can use it wirelessly?
Swimmer Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 yes you can turn off the radio.. then it would just act as a normal wire router.
