just- Posted August 8, 2005 CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 I got a question for the geeks out there. i am running on a Pentium 4 HT 3.4Ghz, i have noticed that i can't use my PC to 100% of the CPU resources on one machine. i went to the bios and turned off HT and when i booted my machine would not even give me the splash screen of windows. does any one know if its possible to run a P4 with HT without the HT, just a pure 3.4Ghz as one CPU and not virtually splitting it thanks
Swimmer Posted August 8, 2005 CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 Yes that is possible.. the real question is why would you not want HT on.. it gives you about 5% boost in supports programs..
just- Posted August 8, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 i wanna see if i can run folding and use 100% of my cpu i just wanna see the diff from HT to not HT i went from a 1.1Ghz to a 3.4Ghz and i know it has been a while now so i am used to it but i dont see a massive increase in speed i wanna see how it is without HT
Swimmer Posted August 8, 2005 CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 i just wanna see the diff from HT to not HT You wont see it.. it is about 5%..and that is in games most of the time.. that or video editing. You are more then welcome to disable it but you will not see any increase or decrease in performance.
spacedinvader Posted August 8, 2005 CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 I have found that for music editing that i actually get better performance without ht enabled. Not sure what the reason though
Swimmer Posted August 8, 2005 CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 depends on if the program supports HT or not.. It is possible that HT can slow down the program also.

just- Posted August 8, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 how do i know if a program supports HT any easy way of knowing?
Swimmer Posted August 8, 2005 CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 Most of the time the manufacture's website will mention it.. most Video editing, music editing, photo editing support hyperthreading..
just- Posted August 8, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 8, 2005 does folding support HT ?
Swimmer Posted August 9, 2005 CID Share Posted August 9, 2005 my guess is that it might.. because they are trying to get the most of your unused cycles.. So optimizing the code for HT processors would makes sense..
