Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 Hiya- as you can see i'm new to this community, so greetings to you all! Please help me pump up the speeds on my connection. ISP: Bulldog Telecommunications Advertised speeds: "8 meg" Connection type: PPPoA Using: Solwise 715 Router/hub/modem (3 in 1). Four computers are connected to it via ethernet. Full Duplex 100Mbps. OS: Windows XP + SP2 on all computers. My speed tests: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 1720 Kbps about 1.7 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB) Download Speed is:: 210 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Fri Aug 12 2005 10:04:54 GMT+0100 (GMT Daylight Time) Bottom Line:: 31X faster than 56K 1MB download in 4.88 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 82.41 % of your hosts average (bulldogdsl.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-YLIMKVUTF :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 496 Kbps about 0.5 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Upload Speed is:: 61 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Fri Aug 12 2005 10:05:40 GMT+0100 (GMT Daylight Time) Bottom Line:: 9X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 16.79 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 64.78 % faster than the average for host (bulldogdsl.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-B0RNH98AQ Tweak test link: http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:1d555dd?service=dsl&speed=8000&os=winXP&via=pppoA I have followed Van Buren's Sticky guide... I now use Sygate instead of ZA but I have not Power cycled my router/modem. My PC is has healthy as it ever can be, I use Firefox as browser, AVG Antivirus... Spybot Adaware SpywareBlaster etc.etc. Because this is the United Kingdom, we use ADSL- so I would imagine some DSL settings will be inappropriate. Please help me figure out my best possible settings with use with cablenut!! Oh- Bulldog as hinted that if we live too far from the local exchange, the phonelines will not be able to support 8megs. That's fair enough, but I really do hope I can get to at least 4Mbps inc. upload. Everything's a little sluggish. The weirdest thing is, my computers are set to MTU 1500, the router to the MTU of 1500, but when I go to speedguide.net it tells me i'm running 1460!!! MSS would be 1420!! AND!! when I put the router's MTU up to 1540 (not technically possible, but I did it!) then speedguide finally told me "yes you are running 1500". MSS being 1460. Weird eh. As far as I know turning on computers doesn't automatically limit each computer's bandwidth. I've tried with 3 computers on and 2 computers on, but the results are pretty much the same. Obviously, when I test, the other computers do not use the internet. Thanks ever so much in advance.
Indestructable Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 8 meg down? what's advertised for your upload? 1.7 on an 8 meg connection is crazy. Van is on, so he'll be here soon I bet~
Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 Well- I thought it was so crazy I got dad to subscribe for their services http://www.bulldoGBroadband.com/ It seems they do advertise 8meg DOWN and 1meg UP stream. that is truly mad. Sorry for editing my posts every 2 seconds btw. I forget to add stuff.
Indestructable Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 that's pretty damn fast! I'll check out the site. edit: that's cheap for those speeds!
VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 hey Fudrake and welcome to the forum also test speed here http://www.testmy.net/o-mirror-VanBuren (use the 20MB test) and http://www.testmy.net/d_load.php?ta=1&top=VanBuren&pop=1&ni=1 (use the 20MB test) that router MTU dosent make sence, what MTU do you have with factory settings on that router? Do you have a manual for the router, perhaps there is a guide how to set it up for PPPoA with a MTU of 1500. Do you see any speed improvement when you force MTU on router to 1540? VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 also make a new tweaktest with windows default settings open cablenut, click delete cablenut tweaks and click save to registry now download Dr.Tcp http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe open it and make sure all MTU fileds is blanked out for all adapters ( you need to scroll if you have several ) should look like this, now click save and reboot your PC VanBuren

VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 says your Max packet sent (MTU): 1492 Max packet recd (MTU): 1492 what are your current MTU in router? that looks like a MTU for PPPoE if your current MTU is above 1492 in router, try setting MTU to 1492 in router aswell and make a new tweaktest VanBuren
Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 MY router's MTU hasn't changed- under my current connection's "ip interface" part... it says MTU 1540 name: ppp-
Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 Done it. Now MSS is a terrible 1412 (minus 80 from Router's MTU!?!?) http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:41e7827?service=dsl&speed=8000&os=winXP&via=pppoA
VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 sorry but i dont think i can help you setup that router, change back to 1500 as MTU in router and make a post in http://www.solwiseforum.co.uk/ why your MTU is off also open Dr.Tcp and set your TcpReceiveWindow to 64240 and click save and reboot come back and let us know what the problem was good luck VanBuren
Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 Hiya!! The router's config i've yet to solve- it's still running at a MTU setting 40 lower than what it actually says in the config screen. I'll try and find out what on earth is happening. For now i'm sticking with this 1540 MTU setting simply because it seems like it's giving me 1500 As for the TCP receive window- Van Buren you are a hero lol Instant increase of around 300Kbps. See for yourself. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2056 Kbps about 2.1 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 251 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Fri Aug 12 2005 12:15:52 GMT+0100 (GMT Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 37X faster than 56K 1MB download in 4.08 sec Diagnosis: 90% + Okay : running at 98.51 % of your hosts average (bulldogdsl.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-K0EDGSZCI If the MTU problem *may* be ignored, would there be any other settings which may improve this speed yet more? Thanks!!
VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 i think you should have the guys at http://www.solwiseforum.co.uk/ looking at your router config. with that RWIN you should ba able to pull atleast 5 Mbps from the Swedish servers and maybe around 3.5 from the main servers. Since your cap is 8 Mbps your not even close now VanBuren
Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 Heh- Solwise support isn't the greatest thing on earth- I posted on their forums asking for help, but now that I returned from shopping to see if there's any responses, THE FORUM'S DOWN!!! I guess i'll have to wait a while longer to see what they come up with eh. Edit: I found that my upload speed has gone a bit. Does that mean upload speed has decreased so that download speeds can be faster? do'h!
VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 you probl need a cablenut tweak to fix that upload download the settings here http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1013.0;attach=2784 and use this path VanBurens_cablenut_settings_version_7_ALL_WIN_OS_AND_SATCABLE_DSL_FIBER_DIAL-UPWinXP_2K_CABLE_DSLMSS1460 dubbleclick on the file thats close to your cap and after that click save to registry now reboot test speed again VanBuren
Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 Should I use the DSL settings then? I thought they wouldn't work that well with my setup because my connection's ADSL. does it matter? I did give them a try, and the last time I did that, there wasn't much improvement. I'll try again though. see what comes up I phoned up Bulldog today, and they advised me to correct my DNS servers (that I did, and not much improvement again) and use their speed testing utility, then send the results to the engineers. I turned out to be ... some 3.55km away from my nearest local exchange. that's a little far by anyone's standards. Nonetheless they said even if I can't attain 8Meg, I should get around 4Mbps. Btw- for those who do use phone lines, would phone line extensions from a wall socket affect the speeds that much? My Router is in my room- and incidentally there's no phone wall socket. The extension is actually plugged into a wall socket in another room (seperated by a wall and toilet lol). I know a little bit about line noise - I mean, I really should plug the phone line straight in the wall socket to reduce noise. However... DOES it really matter that much? It is quite a hassle. Honestly. We have to re-configure all the ethernet cables again, to connect to that router in the other room- one of them cables reaches from the 2nd floor to the ground floor (down a big shaft in the house we found by drilling into the wall. Adventurous, no?) Well anyway- just a bit of information for you to digest. I'd prefer it if I dont' have to move it of course, hehe. VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 phone extensions wires can really mess up the signal and your modem will loose sync and give you packetloss. I suggest you plugging in the modem in the main phone socket and leave your router next to modem and from that you can wire your PC
Fudrake Posted August 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 I'll seriously think about the reconfigurations then. prior to low bandwidth, was the problem of constant disconnections. Now that's been fixed. Can you possibly give me a brief, really approximate approximation as to how much the bandwidth will differ if I plugged it into the wall phone socket instead of using an extension? Strange question I know. You can just see the laziness contained within me that tells me "Don't move the router!!" Still, I really appreciate your help Van Buren, Thanks. *EDIT* OMG!! I'm now a "Cool Guy!!!"
VanBuren Posted August 12, 2005 CID Share Posted August 12, 2005 no problem Its impossible to tell, but your ISP said you should pull atleast 4 Mbps and your around 2Mbps, to guess a reason would be that phone extension wire, but you cant be sure. You hit 10 posts thats makes you a "Cool guy" keep us updated how things work out for you VanBuren
Fudrake Posted August 13, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 13, 2005 Dammit, a technician then phoned me up in the evening telling me that at a distance of around 3550 metres from the local exchange it would be "difficult" to get even 4 megs. It seems I should be able to apply for a cost reduction in the subscription because I technically cannot get 8megs. (which... is fair, and good. ) Today, that's saturday, my bandwidth has slipped to a very sad-looking 1.6 or so on average. eeek. It seems like my line's destined to max out at this speed- they said plugging my router/modem straight into the wall socket would be ideal, but there will not be a great improvement in speed. The best I could do should be around 260KB/s on low-traffic days. I won't complain much now. Line tests have been done and they say there's not much wrong with the phone line. As regards to packet loss, is TCP optimiser (from speedguide.net) an accurate guide? (you know, the latency section) IF so then I don't seem to lose too may packets. So that's the situation now.
VanBuren Posted August 13, 2005 CID Share Posted August 13, 2005 to check packetloss you can use windows xp pathping command start-run-cmd pathping testmy.net and hit enter now wait this can take several minutes also you can use the linequality test here http://www.dslreports.com/tools "Line Packet Loss Testing Packet loss tests on your line, including identification of any problem routers en-route to you.." 3550 metres is Feet: 11646.98162725 feet according to this the limit of 2 Mbps is 16000 feet so you should be able to go abit faster VanBuren
