michtesmy Posted December 3, 2005 CID Share Posted December 3, 2005 Hi, We're with ISP Starhub in Singapore, cable down 2000, up 256, but with inconstant speeds. On weekdays speed ok, but in the evening and weekend speeds drop and we cannot even listen to streaming audio above 64Kbps without buffering. So we think it's the common cable problem of sharing and bandwidthmanagement but Starhub tested from their side and says they do a fine job. What to do? To be honest we're newbies. We tested wth 3 diff laptops, all new, all diff brands, all own WinXP config, always hooked up one at the time. Did evth. Van Buuren advised: install all updates, spyware removal, ad aware, with and without tcp optimizer Speedguide, Cablenut with preset and calculated j79zlr's settings incl. fasterpageloading, disableDNS, increasebuffer etc., doing all this we connected laptop directly to the modem as well as with wireless router and wireless NIC. In short: we did it all. Did 100+ tests through testmy.net and http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ results all the same, meaning no improvement. Presented all data to Starhub, they'll send a technician nxt week but we're sceptic abt. them. Are we lost or what? Please help us with some ideas, we'll happy to donate anyhow, keep up the good work. Thnx! :::.. michtesmy Posted December 5, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 5, 2005 Van Buren, Did the pathping, as in prev mess, but also found out that there's no pack loss when directly connected to the modem. So I tried WinMTR v. 0.8 too using a 0,5 sec interval and 64b pingsize. The results show a loss of 19% when conn to router and/or wireless card and no loss when conn to modem. Did tests several times with several laptops, all the same. Also noticed the average and worst pings getting back from Starhub server and back to my laptop. Guess I've two problems now Directly connected to modem: |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | WinMTR statistics | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 10.15.128.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 16 | 63 | 16 | | 172.20.15.65 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 17 | 47 | 16 | | 172.26.15.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 21 | 110 | 31 | | 172.20.8.129 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 20 | 187 | 16 | | 203.116.5.97 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 23 | 203 | 16 | | gi1-3-0-an-utl-int02.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 29 | 219 | 16 | | sl-gw25-stk-8-2.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 203 | 224 | 266 | 235 | | sl-bb20-stk-8-1.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 237 | 422 | 250 | | sl-bb20-sj-9-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 234 | 406 | 235 | | sl-bb25-sj-13-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 253 | 484 | 313 | | sl-bb23-ana-6-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 219 | 270 | 531 | 485 | | sl-bb25-ana-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 219 | 267 | 484 | 266 | | sl-bb24-fw-1-0.sprintlink.net - 2 | 181 | 179 | 265 | 321 | 766 | 500 | | sl-bb27-fw-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 306 | 532 | 297 | | sl-st20-dal-13-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 250 | 298 | 688 | 438 | | sl-theplanet-5-0.sprintlink.net - 2 | 181 | 179 | 250 | 283 | 656 | 297 | | vl31.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 311 | 750 | 281 | | vl42.dsr02.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 291 | 578 | 297 | | gi1-0-2.car17.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 287 | 547 | 282 | | 85.67-18-179.reverse.theplanet.com -0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 286 | 516 | 266 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| Connected to the router: |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | WinMTR statistics | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 192.168.1.1 - 19 | 181 | 148 | 0 | 5 | 32 | 0 | | 10.15.128.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 18 | 47 | 15 | | 172.20.15.65 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 18 | 47 | 31 | | 172.26.15.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 20 | 172 | 32 | | 172.20.8.129 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 22 | 203 | 15 | | 203.116.5.97 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 28 | 187 | 47 | | gi2-3-0-an-utl-int02.starhub.net.sg - 1 | 181 | 180 | 0 | 28 | 172 | 31 | | sl-gw25-stk-8-2.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 225 | 328 | 219 | | sl-bb21-stk-8-1.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 235 | 390 | 235 | | sl-bb24-sj-9-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 233 | 391 | 234 | | sl-bb20-ana-6-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 219 | 260 | 469 | 250 | | sl-bb23-ana-9-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 219 | 272 | 532 | 250 | | sl-bb25-ana-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 234 | 273 | 468 | 250 | | sl-bb24-fw-1-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 250 | 296 | 469 | 281 | | sl-bb27-fw-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 307 | 516 | 297 | | sl-st20-dal-13-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 305 | 515 | 343 | | sl-theplanet-5-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 282 | 343 | 282 | | vl32.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 313 | 1172 | 297 | | vl41.dsr01.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 292 | 469 | 297 | | gi1-0-1.car17.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 2 | 181 | 179 | 265 | 288 | 531 | 297 | | 85.67-18-179.reverse.theplanet.com -0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 287 | 500 | 297 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| WinMTR - 0.8. So I tried WinMTR v. 0.8 too using a 0,5 sec interval and 64b pingsize. The results show a loss of 19% when conn to router and/or wireless card and no loss when conn to modem. Did tests several times with several laptops, all the same. Also noticed the average and worst pings getting back from Starhub server and back to my laptop. Guess I've two problems now Directly connected to modem: |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | WinMTR statistics | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 10.15.128.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 16 | 63 | 16 | | 172.20.15.65 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 17 | 47 | 16 | | 172.26.15.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 21 | 110 | 31 | | 172.20.8.129 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 20 | 187 | 16 | | 203.116.5.97 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 23 | 203 | 16 | | gi1-3-0-an-utl-int02.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 29 | 219 | 16 | | sl-gw25-stk-8-2.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 203 | 224 | 266 | 235 | | sl-bb20-stk-8-1.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 237 | 422 | 250 | | sl-bb20-sj-9-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 234 | 406 | 235 | | sl-bb25-sj-13-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 253 | 484 | 313 | | sl-bb23-ana-6-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 219 | 270 | 531 | 485 | | sl-bb25-ana-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 219 | 267 | 484 | 266 | | sl-bb24-fw-1-0.sprintlink.net - 2 | 181 | 179 | 265 | 321 | 766 | 500 | | sl-bb27-fw-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 306 | 532 | 297 | | sl-st20-dal-13-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 250 | 298 | 688 | 438 | | sl-theplanet-5-0.sprintlink.net - 2 | 181 | 179 | 250 | 283 | 656 | 297 | | vl31.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 311 | 750 | 281 | | vl42.dsr02.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 291 | 578 | 297 | | gi1-0-2.car17.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 287 | 547 | 282 | | 85.67-18-179.reverse.theplanet.com -0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 286 | 516 | 266 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| Connected to the router: |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | WinMTR statistics | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 192.168.1.1 - 19 | 181 | 148 | 0 | 5 | 32 | 0 | | 10.15.128.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 18 | 47 | 15 | | 172.20.15.65 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 18 | 47 | 31 | | 172.26.15.1 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 20 | 172 | 32 | | 172.20.8.129 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 22 | 203 | 15 | | 203.116.5.97 - 0 | 181 | 181 | 0 | 28 | 187 | 47 | | gi2-3-0-an-utl-int02.starhub.net.sg - 1 | 181 | 180 | 0 | 28 | 172 | 31 | | sl-gw25-stk-8-2.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 225 | 328 | 219 | | sl-bb21-stk-8-1.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 235 | 390 | 235 | | sl-bb24-sj-9-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 203 | 233 | 391 | 234 | | sl-bb20-ana-6-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 219 | 260 | 469 | 250 | | sl-bb23-ana-9-0.sprintlink.net - 0 | 181 | 181 | 219 | 272 | 532 | 250 | | sl-bb25-ana-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 234 | 273 | 468 | 250 | | sl-bb24-fw-1-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 250 | 296 | 469 | 281 | | sl-bb27-fw-14-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 307 | 516 | 297 | | sl-st20-dal-13-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 305 | 515 | 343 | | sl-theplanet-5-0.sprintlink.net - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 282 | 343 | 282 | | vl32.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 313 | 1172 | 297 | | vl41.dsr01.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 1 | 181 | 180 | 265 | 292 | 469 | 297 | | gi1-0-1.car17.dllstx4.theplanet.com - 2 | 181 | 179 | 265 | 288 | 531 | 297 | | 85.67-18-179.reverse.theplanet.com -0 | 180 | 180 | 265 | 287 | 500 | 297 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| WinMTR - 0.8. michtesmy Posted December 9, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 9, 2005 Hi Just-, Thnx for helping. Connected wired or wireless, no difference, also used 3 laptops, always one at the time. Router is WRT54G, v 2.2(although Sysinfo says Hardware version 2, dunno if that means someth) Vendor:LINKSYS ModelName:WRT54G Firmware Version:v4.20.7 , Aug 18 2005 #:004 Boot Version:v3.4.2 CodePattern:W54G Country:US RF Status:enabled RF Firmware Version:v4.20.7 RF Domain:US (channel 1~11) RF Channel:9 RF SSID:LangstonVille#902 -----Dynamic Information RF Mac Address:00:13:10:0D:84:E8 LAN Mac Address:00:13:10:0D:84:E6 WAN Mac Address:00:13:10:0D:84:E7 Hardware Version:2.0 Device Serial No.: Weird thing is that loss only occurs when pinging 64 bytes with an interval equal or below 0.6 seconds. Above 0.6 seconds, e.g. 0.8 or greater, there's no measurable loss, testing with WinMTR. Another thing is that pings r all indicated Average or Worst instead of Best. | WinMTR statistics using 0.8 interval | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 192.168.1.1 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 0 | 46 | 0 | | 10.15.128.1 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 12 | 78 | 0 | | 172.20.15.65 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 10 | 63 | 0 | | 172.26.15.1 - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 16 | 187 | 15 | | 172.20.8.81 - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 20 | 219 | 15 | | 172.20.8.246 - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 15 | 172 | 16 | | 203.116.7.13 - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 14 | 156 | 16 | |vlan911-an-cat6k-ts-2-rsm1.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 19 | 172 | 16 | | vlan917-cat6k-ts2-r2.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 20 | 188 | 0 | | ge3-1-gsrts2.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 14 | 94 | 16 | | pos1-0-gsrtl2.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 13 | 62 | 16 | | 203.118.2.19 - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 12 | 78 | 0 | | 203.116.254.109 - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 14 | 110 | 0 | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Using 0.6 secs interval | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 192.168.1.1 - 20 | 102 | 82 | 0 | 0 | 16 | 0 | | 10.15.128.1 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 14 | 141 | 16 | | 172.20.15.65 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 15 | 140 | 15 | | 172.26.15.1 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 20 | 172 | 15 | | 172.20.8.81 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 21 | 187 | 0 | | 172.20.8.246 - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 16 | 156 | 0 | | 203.116.7.13 - 1 | 102 | 101 | 0 | 13 | 109 | 0 | |vlan911-an-cat6k-ts-2-rsm1.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 18 | 250 | 15 | | vlan917-cat6k-ts2-r2.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 102 | 102 | 0 | 18 | 219 | 16 | | ge3-0-gsrts1.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 15 | 62 | 16 | | pos1-0-gsrtl1.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 13 | 47 | 0 | | ge3-14-dstl01.starhub.net.sg - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 14 | 63 | 16 | | 203.116.254.109 - 0 | 101 | 101 | 0 | 12 | 31 | 15 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| WinMTR - 0.8. Blunted 2 Posted December 9, 2005 CID Share Posted December 9, 2005 what kinda setup you have? could it be bad wires somewhere or maybe the wires are ran by something eletronic that causes interference that might also affect wireless. i had a problem like that with my dsl once that gave me really bad packet loss and it was because my dsl modem was near my stereo amp. there can be so many things that can cause it but its worth a shot if its near anything like that.
