resopalrabotnick Posted December 21, 2005 CID Share Posted December 21, 2005 phone outlet?!?!?!?! i do hope that there is an ethernet connection to the downstairs one... is the plug exactly like a phone plug or is it wider like a network plug? asubaseball727 Posted December 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 21, 2005 most likely an ethernet connection. I doubt I'd be getting even half of my speeds if i had it hooked up to a phoen cord. sorry, Im mere useless with the connection and rotuer stuff. resopalrabotnick Posted December 21, 2005 CID Share Posted December 21, 2005 not at all. a phone line in between would explain the problems....
asubaseball727 Posted December 22, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 22, 2005 Yeah, I'm sure its an ethernet because I have an actual phone cord on the other side of the computer. So with that out of the way, do you think its a problem with the router, modem, or comcast?
resopalrabotnick Posted December 22, 2005 CID Share Posted December 22, 2005 yes.
resopalrabotnick Posted December 22, 2005 CID Share Posted December 22, 2005 but seriously. what model modem and router do you have. for some reason it looks like the modem isn't answering pings, which sounds like bad manners, but the router should. unless the modem is a model with some router functionality that is in stealth mode? resopalrabotnick Posted December 22, 2005 CID Share Posted December 22, 2005 the firewall being the software and winxp firewall or the firewall of the router? is that test with or without the router? am i losing my mind? and sorry, i can't think of a reason why the first hops would time out and the rest be decent. just like the one tracert you posted with everything but the last hop timed out. asubaseball727 Posted December 22, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 22, 2005 The firewall is software and winxp, the test is with the router ( I only get 1 time out when connected to the modem , I don't think you're losing your mind , and neither can I! asubaseball727 Posted December 23, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 23, 2005 So I should just call up good ol' comcast and tell them that my modem is out of date and would like a new one?
resopalrabotnick Posted December 23, 2005 CID Share Posted December 23, 2005 i'll be damned. the thing does appear to have routing functions. download the getting started pdf and look at chapter 5. you can have multiple comps attached via a hub. that means the thing should be a router. you can disable internet access for sertain devices in there. hook the comps up to the router and the router to the modem. go to the list of devices page it displays and see if only the router or all devices appear in the list. if all do, disable access for the non routrer devices. (better yet if you have a hub use that instead of the router. or try connecting the modem to the router using not the wan port but just one of the normal internal net ports so the modem does the routing. just some things to try out, see what happens. off topic, the wav files for modem events sounds like a cool feature!
