asubaseball727 Posted December 23, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 23, 2005 So you reccomend keeping my current modem?
resopalrabotnick Posted December 23, 2005 CID Share Posted December 23, 2005 if you can get it to work, sure. if not, and if ytou rent it, your isp should have a more current model. and the thing seems to have some nice features, looks kinda neat, and that wave stuff is something i havent seen anywhere else. so if you can get it to work, fine. if not, see if you can get a free replacement. if not, then ask which models the isp recommends from their experience and ask for opinions on those here. asubaseball727 Posted December 24, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 24, 2005 I read chapter 5 in that manual, and am really confused. I went to their site and the format was different than they show on the site. Like I said earlier, I don't know much about the modem and connecting it, any help is appreciated. asubaseball727 Posted December 24, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 24, 2005 Has anyone else tried contacting ther ISP and asking for a new modem?

resopalrabotnick Posted December 26, 2005 CID Share Posted December 26, 2005 i personally haven't, but it's happened before. if you bought yours however, you might have to agree to rent one. just call em and ask the tech, he will be able to tell you what the deal is. coknuck Posted December 26, 2005 CID Share Posted December 26, 2005 I just turned in a faulty modem I bought and got a new one. Most all gave a 1 year warranty on them. I got mine from my isp.
asubaseball727 Posted December 29, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 29, 2005 5. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need. You most likely only need "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)." If you share files on your home network, you also need "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks." I went back through all of the sticky, and i found a "QoS Packet Scheduler". It reccomended uninstalling ones i dont use, and I'm not sure what that is. asubaseball727 Posted January 5, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 5, 2006 Ok, well a comcast tech should be out saturday to replace the modem. I'll post the new speeds up here ASAP. Hopefully the new modem should fix this.
asubaseball727 Posted January 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Well, the new modem came, and my computer upstairs got to about 90% of the speed it should be so thats good, but on this computer I get these speeds: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2315 Kbps about 2.3 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 283 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sat Jan 07 2006 23:05:53 GMT-0600 (Central Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 41X faster than 56K 1MB download in 3.62 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 48.96 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-SOH307XNL I was thinking that maybe I don't have the cords plugged into their correct spots on the router. There is a WAN connection port and I'm not sure what it is/ what its purpose is. Also, I have a PS2 Online cord in the router, does that decrease the speed? I'm running out of things to check. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
asubaseball727 Posted January 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 After all of this trouble I came to think maybe it was the ethernet cords. So i was thinking about switching to wireless internet. Do you reccomend this change or have suggestions to whats going on now? Maybe its the router that needs to be replaced? I'm running out of options and any help is great. Thanks
resopalrabotnick Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 the ps2 being the ethernet for a playstation? shouldn't affect anything. the wan port is the port that the router connects to the modem with. the other ports you use for whatever you need. asubaseball727 Posted January 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Ok, thanks that helps. But do you have any idea on why I'm only getting 49% of the average host speed while upstairs i get around 90%?
resopalrabotnick Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 the slow comp is tweaked right? and it's too fast to be a bad cable. you prolly checked spy/ad/malware. i didn't check, did you try connecting directly to modem, switching ports on router, connecting only the one to router?
asubaseball727 Posted January 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Yes, I've tweaked the slow one, ( not the fast one ) It's virus/spyware free, I haven't tried connecting just one to the router, but I'll try that next... Here is the speed test from the slow one connected directly to the modem: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2247 Kbps about 2.2 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 274 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sun Jan 08 2006 17:38:49 GMT-0600 (Central Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 40X faster than 56K 1MB download in 3.74 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 47.52 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-WXUP62J4Z

asubaseball727 Posted January 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 Here is the speed results with just one computer hooked up to the router :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2068 Kbps about 2.1 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 252 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sun Jan 08 2006 17:58:14 GMT-0600 (Central Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 37X faster than 56K 1MB download in 4.06 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 43.73 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-1CU0BK3XE Do you think it's something with the slow computer, because it starts of fast ( so i get the 12160 file )but then it slows down? resopalrabotnick Posted January 8, 2006 CID Share Posted January 8, 2006 what are the system specs on the slow one. have you defragged the harddrive, made sure there is enough free space, made sure swapfile is ok etc?

( I reached 79% earlier ) :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2975 Kbps about 3 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 363 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Mon Jan 09 2006 21:26:10 GMT-0600 (Central Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 53X faster than 56K 1MB download in 2.82 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 62.92 % of your hosts average (comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-6LXPZ0IQV It's not great but better than what I'm getting on my PC.
