Less ping is better. With more hops the general ping will be higher, as as the data has to go further away from you.

Ok let me try and understand this even though it takes me 10 hops to get to  216.254.92.2 is my DNS server with ping results of 14,14,14,14

is faster than 148.xxx.xxx is higher at 90ms but only 8 hops away because the 90ms is slower.

Makes sense I guess ....ever though I am 2 hops furthur then 148.xxx.xxx DNS ... the time for me to get to those 8 hops I can get there much quicker at 216.254.92.2

I gotta ask..is less ping time in (ms) better then less hops to a DNS?

Ex: 216.254.92.2 is 10 hops away from me with a ping time of 14ms

or 148.xxx.xxx is higher at 90ms but only 8 hops away

that is right.. you are capped at 3meg.. so if you have 2 computers then it is 1.5 to each computer.. makes sense to me.. I have seen this before when you have more than one computer on a connection..

But I thought that is what a hub did... I thought a router gave both connections 3 megs a piece, a hub is what splits a line. Because when I had cable internet with a seperate Dlink router we would both hit cap on download ...the cable service was 5.1megs download and we would both hit 5.1megs on the download at the same time.

The 4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.6 are open DNS servers belonging to Level3, a CLEC acquired by Verizon I believe or some other telco some some people argue they're Verizon DNS numbers but they do come back as registered to Level3.

I got a home netowrking kit from my isp, everything is fine with it, but it's not acting like a router it is acting like a hub..... basically I can say is that it's a dsl modem and router in one made by speedstream model 6520... the reason I say it is acting like a hub is because if I do a speed test all by myself I get 2.5 megs download and if my wife does the test she gets 2.5 megs download. But if we both run the test at the same time... she will get 1.5 and I get 1.5 .... which is not right for a router at all. Can anyone tell me what is wrong please?

I'm looking for a DNS server to enter into my tcp/ip settings because I was talking with the tech from my ISP provider sympatico and he says there DNS server sucks..... He said the best DNS to get would be Google ..... since they have over 6000 DNS servers. I live in Montreal,Canada if that helps anyone.

I'm not on cable thou, I' using DSL and my results are always changing, sometimes i get 1.7megs download then 2.0,then 2.6.... never staying the same.

I live in montreal,Canada,,, and I have no problems in speed or ping on east coast servers, but I do have problems with west coast servers. Last night I did a test on testmy.net and downloaded with no problems at 2.5 megs but tonight I can only get as high as 2 megs sometimes even lower and I changed nothing to my settings and checked for viruses or spyware and came up clean.

It's not that hard, just go to your control panel and then choose networking... then pick the tcp/ip of your lan card and enter the info in there.

DSL hanging/stalling can usually be fixed by putting a dummy ip address in your tcp/ip properties (192.168.1.10 or similar subnet/LAN ip) ; at least this was an issue with Bellatlantic/Verizon setups on Win98 , give it a try ~!

NIC???, but i guess the means a newer driver for my dlink card... I just downloaded the newest driver just now.... as for spyware, my spybot S&D didn't detect any, also using AVG antivirus, but no firewall. I will try those internet resets you were talking about though and let you know.

Okay, not sure what all those meant, but im using bell sympatico, on a speedstream 5200 modem, not usb...i'm using the ethernet connection to my dlink card... no router at this time and it is not wireless.

Hi all, maybe Van will see this message, but I just got DSL today and I have an intermitant problem with it.... it will download etc,etc just fine.... but sometimes when I try to go to a different web site, it just stalls for about 15 secs and then DSL finally kicks in and loads the page..... any ideas?

I found my dial up modem in another computer and installed it in my computer, now Windows 98 automatically detects it as a Rockwell v34 voice Speakerphone PnP. But I know that is the chipset being used on the modem. But that doesn't tell me what type of brand of modem it is. It's a 33.6k modem and I'm trying to download the latest drivers for it...but I have no clue what to look for to download. Can anyone help please.

Hey Artic Wolf When you tried my settings was this with the registry settings also?If you only did the Cablenut settings it wouldnt work very well.Which MTU worked best for you 576 or 1500? On the test at Broadband reports did it show window scaling enabled?

I hate using the browser and how you have to sign in into AOL to use there service. Now I made a new connection in dial up networking and used the same screen name and password to login.... but it says wrong password. Is there an encryption in AOL for there passwords where you can only use there program to log on to the internet?

I posted twice to seperate this.I need to know what com port your modem uses & if its external or internal.You need to update the driver for your modem if possible but you may already have the newest driver for your 33.6K. Your distance from the telco also make a major difference in possible speed.You are already close to the max a 33.5K is supposed to do so the tweaks may not help .I would like to see if they will get you over the 33.6K.

After I get the information above we may change the com port speed in WIN.INI & hardware manager if it is an external modem.
