  1. Maybe a little laymans on that one please?  :grin2:

Firefox and Safari too name a few adhere to a "W3C" standard for HTML.  IE6 & 7 do not adhere to this which is why web sites designed with bad code and by lazy web designers will work with IE6 & 7 but not Firefox.  Microsoft has been lax on this which is why HTML writer were able to get lazy.  So when you see sites "Optimized for Internet Explorer" usually it will have bad code and not work with Firefox.

As an example the company my sister works for does webpage design.  She just answers phones.  Anyway they have lost several accounts because the pages they were designing would not work in Firefox or Safari.  The designers excuse was that it would take hime three full days to correct this problem for which he wanted to charge the customer.  If you do not it right the first time why do it at all?  especially a web page where not everyone is using IE6 or 7 for one reason or another.

  2. Yes a WiFi router can be hacked.  It is basically a computer.  Try changing your SSID and then set it to not broadcast.  Still not foolproof but it is another step towards prevention.  Or shut it down for a few days and go hard wired.  You can also let him know he does not have permission and that he he breaking FCC laws by accessing your router/PC without permission.

  3. China needs to sanctioned again.  How many people have to die from the poisoned foods and excessive lead in our children's toys before something is done.

Also as for Toyota, it maybe a japanese company but my Toyota was built in America by americans.  THe parts may have been imported but the vehicle was built here.  Several Dodge's and Ford's are built in mexico.  BMW has a plant in the carolina's.

It is hard to find good quality american product's but I do when I can.  When I had to downsize my vehicle Toyota had the best MPG vehicles at the time.  And the way gas prices were going at the time that was the only choice I had at the time.  Now 2 years later "American" mad vehicles are starting to catch up.  Keep in mind that most of the electronics in our beloved vehicles are made overseas.

  4. If you have the OEM key on your computer you might be able to download a copy and use that key to install.  I'm not condoneing illegal downloading but if using the key that you already own you should be fine.  It may not always work either.  Also on some of the illegal download site you can find copies of restore disk for your model of PC.  Again by using your OEM key should make your new copy a legal install.  It is a gray area for most.  Just a poosible ide.

  5. Sounds like you are biting off more than you can chew.  First thing might be to increase your incoming bandwith.  Next thing if you can not find the answer hear would be to open the manuals for your routers and read how to get tothe port blocking section.  Next do research on the differnt torrent downloaders.  THese will let you know what ports need forwarding.  These will be the ports that need to be blocked.  Chances are you will run out of spaces for blocking since there are some torrent download programs.  Keep in mind that Comcast tried this and wound up in a whole heap of trouble.  The big differance is you are offering a free service on a private network.  I'm familiar with Linksys, this is why I cannot tell you about Netgear without actually looking at it.

  6. As stated.  The speaker jack is an "Output".  Hence the reason you hear music.  If you plug a micropone into a speaker jack you will either get nothing, some sound out the micrphone or ruin the microphone because of overdriving the pickup.  In order to record you must plug the microphone into an "Input" such as a microphone jack or another input jack of some kind, but not the speakers.

  7. The biggest problem with Vista is that there are so many vendors that have specialty programs that just will not work with Vista for one reason or another.  The samething happened with windows 3.1 to 95, 95 to 98, 98 to XP, XP tp XP SP2.  There will always be those that refuse to upgrade until they have no choice to do so.  Vista works great as long as you have the software that it supports.  The only problems that I have had is with the specialty programs for work that the manufacture refuses to support on Vista.  Part of it is Microsoft's fault, part of it is the software manufactures, and some falls back on the consumer.  The reason I include the consumer is because there is so many that complained the XP was not secure enough.  What's the first thing they want to do when they get Vista?  Start disabling the security features.  There will always be arguments over what OS was better and what software did not work on said OS.  If you like XP keep using it.  There are several people still using 98 and working without problems.  Eventually they will have to upgrade.  They won't be able to get hardware or software to work with the technology of the new generation.  Don't get me wrong, Vista does have it's problems but what OS does not have problems.  Linux and MAC are not immune.  I have seen many Linux box's go chest up and MAC's that get virus's.  And neither you can take to just any PC shop.  Best thing to do is Overcome and adapt

  8. Something else that works is a very high pitched whistle.  Answer the phone talking in a very low voice so they turn up the volume on the headset.  Then let it wale.  After awhile the first thing they say is "Please don't blow thay whistle in my ear".  My answer "Then quit calling me" and I let it wale again.

  9. Love the way people are so quick to blame Vista.  I have had Vista for a little over a year on my laptop.  I connect to various wireless and wired networks throughout the day.  I have never had a problem getting an IP address that was a Vista problem.  Our work network has a Sonic firewall that will occasionally block laptops from connecting.  A quick reboot and all is well.  Not saying Vista does not have problems.

The arguments these days against Vista are the exact samething people had against XP then again with XP SP2 when it arrived.

If the above does not work try a system restore, he may have unknowingly downloaded something that is interferring with the network card or protocol stacks.  Also make sure all of windows updates are done and the hardware drivers are update.

  10. I'd be careful about calling ethanol low/poor performance.  I used to think the same thing until I watched an Indy car race.  As quickly as those cars got around that track, 220MPH average, that's pretty quick.  Granted those engines are designed to run on ethanol and not gas, but that is the thing that needs to be done.  Design engines to run on the stuff and get the ethanol in the stations.  Also ethanol can be made from grass clippings and other leafy products not just corn and wheat products.  Granted even a 10% ethanol (E90) I have notice a drop in performance in an engine but again putting ethanol in an engine designed for gasoline you will lose performance.

Myself I'll be one of the last to get on SUV owner's about driving them around.  I used to have one but it got to the point that I could not afford to fill it up and had to get rid of it.  If it was paid for I'd still have it today.  The sad part is it is costing me the same amount of money to fill a 2007 Camry today that it cost to fill a 2000 Durango 2 years ago.  I have a family of 5 and the Durango was perfect, we fit in the Camry but it is a bit snug.

Gas strikes will not work.  As nation we depend on our oil burning vehicle too much.  Congess will not do anything since most if not all own stock in something that makes them rich off high oil prices.

The best we can do is drive more sensibly, pick our errands better and decide on what luxury to give up each week to fill the tank.

  11. I also have like Vista alot.  There are a few things that to me should not have been moved, "Add Remove Programs" for one.  Those that hat Vista so much as mentioned either have not tried it yeat or have installed a pirated copy onto a mchine that barely ran XP.  Admittedlly I used a pirated copy of Vista Ultimate a few months before getting a new PC with Vista Home Premium.  I no longer use the pirated copy.  In the work I do I have only had a few minor problems with Visa.  We have a couple pieces of software that barely worked with XP.  Naturally they were finicky or did not work at all.  One I found works perfectly in safe mode.  Compatibility mode did not help either.  My only other complaint is that it seems to take a long time to install a printer on "Standard TCP/IP".  Other than those few problems which seems to be evident in every release of windows I must say I like Vista.

As for MACS, people just don't know.  Yes MACS are more reliable compared to windows.  The reason for this is that windows/Microsoft has the target on thier backs.  People do not create viruses targeted at MAC computers.  They still get viruses though.  I have witnessed it.  I have seen both the old and the new MACS get viruses.  Afterall it is still a computer.  They still crash.  I have seen it.  In talking with people that have to use MAC and PC in the everyday world thay tell me that MAC can be just as troublesome as a PC.  PC is easier to fix because more people know about PC and parts are cheaper.

Admittedly I would not mind owning a MAC but I would also have "Parallel"(sp?) installed so that I could run XP/Vista at the same time.  Mainly becasue for my job there is no software written by the manufacture to do all of my job.

In closing I must also say that some of the biggest complainers also did not like Win98 or XP when it came out either.  THey wanted the old system.  If upgrading to Vista make sure you have a computer that will run it or buy a new PC.  Preferablly buy a new PC, less problems.  The components are made for it.

  12. Depending on RAM setup you may have to get rid of the current RAM.  If you have 1GB memory you may have two 512's instead of one large stick.  If this is the case you may have to buy 2 sticks of ram to get your 2 GB's.  Been there on a Compaq already.  This may not be the case since I have not looked at your particular laptop.  Just a word of caution on expectations.  Dell does have nice laptops though.
