North sub of chicago. I think that Comcast finally got everyone on the new hardware that Comcast has installed. I would love to see some more posts from Chicago area people!! I think I am going to start the tweaking tonight to see if i can get it up a little higher

To me it really doesnt matter. As long as the server is on a backbone you speed will be fairly reasonable. I think that is what Truspeed shows. Ca3le?? I would not vote for international but that other 2 yea that would be ok. Dont put anything in chicago!! Chicago sucks for server location. We are on a really old network. I think the current server is located in Texas if i remember from an earlier post.

When you connect at that speed it is telling you what you set in that window. 56 is not capable of those speeds. The faster you do connect the faster you will surf and download. However the FCC i believe has limited the connection speed to 53.6kbs so anything higher than that I am willing to bet is some tweak that you have installed and it is showing you some outragious number. This makes you think that you are surfing faster but you really are not. One word for faster internet=Broadband.

Ok....The thing about wireless networks is that a lot of stuff can interfer witht them ie: 2.4ghz cordless phones, microwaves, etc. You should get some where in the 20mbs range. The 54mb is it maximum output. You will NEVER see this speed. You might want to change channels to see if there is some interfierence in the area. The other thing is that you could have someone in the area, 300 ft- 500 ft, running on the same channel. Try that then post the results again. I do know that the 802.11b version gets about 3.2-3.6mbs. That is the 11mbs version. So about 5x that would be 15-17mbs. However i still think that the technology is better now then before so 20mbs isnt unreasonable.

Yea... I did the same thing when I first started "tweaking" my 56k line. It kept saying that it was faster. Now dont get my wrong it will be about .2-.5k faster on downloads over like 10-15mb. I think this is what you did/changed. Yes...I still have my 56k modem installed

If you want faster speeds go broadband!! Dont try another 56k ISP!!! They my say like 5x faster than standard dialup but they are just placing programs that condence the website so that not all of the graphics are loaded at one time. Check around call you phone company and cable tv company to see what they offer. Remember you want ADSL! -

OK the best deal that i could find is EarthLink Cable internet access 2000/384. it is 29.95 for the first 6 months then it jumps to 42.00. This is a good deal. Few other questions... Do you have a seperate phoneline for you computer? What ISP are you currently on?
