RTB Posted January 4, 2004 CID Share Posted January 4, 2004 There's a rumor going around that Chello is limiting all but the most used ports to less than what you should get. Right now my download is ~1400 and the cap is 1500, that's ok. But playing online is almost impossible, since the connection just can't keep up. Is there a way to test download speed using ports that aren't used much?
CA3LE Posted January 4, 2004 CID Share Posted January 4, 2004 let me research.. I have never thought of that.
RTB Posted January 7, 2004 Author CID Share Posted January 7, 2004 Any news yet? I might have a problem uploading, I get this: ::: Upload Stats ::: Connection is: 38 kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 KB) Upload Speed is: 5 Kb/sec Auth Code: 250571 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 1 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 204.8 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?top=&ta=&num=250571&kbps=38&gen=gen&a=4&b=0&c=1145.14285714286 ::: Upload Stats ::: Connection is: 42 kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 KB) Upload Speed is: 5 Kb/sec Auth Code: 250631 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 1 times faster than 56K you can upload 1MB in 204.8 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?top=&ta=&num=250631&kbps=42&gen=gen&a=4&b=0&c=1145.14285714286 It's supposed to be 128 up, but then again, it could be chello limiting bandwidth again. CA3LE Posted January 7, 2004 CID Share Posted January 7, 2004 I am still looking into per-port testing... that will be a nice tool to add to my arsinal... but it sounds pretty hard to do, but if it's possible I will get it done... and have a new tool that no other website on the planet has - D
Swimmer Posted January 7, 2004 CID Share Posted January 7, 2004 How could they limit ports that are on your computer?? I mean doesnt your connection go into a router? Then the router routes it to the nessary ports correct?? So the ISP doesnt have control of the router. Therefore how could they limit speed on the mutiplayer ports. I have never heard of anything like this. Let me know what you find out! You might have a good case in court if they do limit the ports speed. CA3LE Posted January 7, 2004 CID Share Posted January 7, 2004 You can think of it this way... your connection goes through their routers... their routers are before your router (or computer) therefor they have control over your ports before you do. Alot of cable providers turn off some ports to prevent servers running (so that you need to get their business level of service) port 21 and 80 mostly. It would not suprise me all that much if they would slow down some common game server ports. It doesn't take too much bandwidth to play a MPG (4-12 KB/sec), but hosting one will take a bit more (4-12 KB/sec per player) and the provider doesn't want you leaving a server up for weeks on end sucking up the bandwidth. Like I said I will do a little research to give me an idea of how I will build this - Damon
RTB Posted January 7, 2004 Author CID Share Posted January 7, 2004 It's already illigal to run a server using chello, but I don't care, sometimes I just have to host 4 - 12 KB/sec for a MPG? That's low, and if online gameplay is laggy, they must be limiting the ports to even lower. Swimmer: You can't prove that game ports are being restricted, they'll just say your tests were flawed and the results inconclusive. With specific port testing ZoneAlarm might be the biggest problem you'll face, it blocks any access to ports other than legally allowed ones, and then it's still very strict. Edit: Is there any way to improve online gameplay? Quake 3 offers a few options, but ignoring those... RWin doesn't affect it right?
Swimmer Posted January 7, 2004 CID Share Posted January 7, 2004 I was under the impress for xbox live and xbconnect you need at least 128 kbs to be able to host a game. 12kbs would be really laggy on any game i would think??
CA3LE Posted January 8, 2004 CID Share Posted January 8, 2004 They just say they require more.. they don't actually use all the bandwidth ... 128 kbps is 15.63 KB/sec
RTB Posted February 8, 2004 Author CID Share Posted February 8, 2004 One month, and no improvement. In fact, it got worse thanks to a router. How much upload do you need to play (not host) online games, such as Quake3?
RTB Posted February 11, 2004 Author CID Share Posted February 11, 2004 PARTY TIME! It's official! Chello is raising caps, from 1500 to 2560 down, and from 128 to 384 upload. Bad part is that it may take a few months before existing members get the speed increase. New members benefit from the new speed caps immidiatly. Swimmer Posted February 11, 2004 CID Share Posted February 11, 2004 Try power cycling your modem!! You might get the updated packet that raises the cap.
