Ryan314 Posted January 9, 2006 CID Share Posted January 9, 2006 Ok, so my friends computer recently crashed... he doesnt know what happened but hes kinda rich so he bought a new one.. his old hard drive is pretty big and he asked me if i wanted it.. im almost positive its compattible... but im not sure if i can just unplug mine and plug in the other one.. or do i have to do something else?? Swimmer Posted January 9, 2006 CID Share Posted January 9, 2006 You are going to have to reformat the hard drive if you want to use it most likely.. As long as it is working you can add it to your system with not problems... Just make sure that the jumpers are on cable select and you should be fine. organ_shifter Posted January 11, 2006 CID Share Posted January 11, 2006 As Swimmer stated, if the drive hasn't been touched already, the setting is more than likely Cable Select. That would allow Ryan314 to connect the hard drive to the secondary IDE plug option from the same strip already connected to the main drive in his system, and not have to change anything. The secondary IDE plug along with the Cable Select setting will automatically configure the drive as Slave. If not, he'll have to set it to slave manually. TheHalf Posted January 11, 2006 CID Share Posted January 11, 2006 Chances are that Secondary IDE controller will have 1 if not 2 optical drives on it. So if he wants to install that HDD on the Primary IDE controller he will need to set it to slave UNLESS it's a Dell PC, where it can remain on cable select.
