etw926 Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 I recently upgraded my Verizon DSL Account to 3/768. I live in Brooklyn, NY and my download results are nowhere near where they should be. This morning I was registering at 2700, and for the last 8 hours, here is where I have been: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 308 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 386 kB) Download Speed is:: 38 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sat Jan 14 00:36:00 EST 2006 Bottom Line:: 5X faster than 56K 1MB download in 26.95 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 6.53 % of your hosts average (verizon.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-KP8EA4LU2 My upload hasn't really changed. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 through a Belkin Wireless (Computer I'm testing on is Hard Wired through Ethernet) High speed Router and have used the cablenut tweak with no improved results. I read in another form that customers in the Brooklyn and Queens area are having problems with slow speeds because Verizon can't keep up with the rate of new customers. Could this be true? Any help would be appreciated.
brock01 Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 it could be true sure, do they have a site that tells the networks staus? that could tell you if something might be wrong, i know that brighthouse has it, maybe they do as well
etw926 Posted January 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 There is definitely something going on with Verizon here in Brooklyn.
FallowEarth Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 Got a router (is it wireless)? Try a direct connection to the modem and post trace and speedtest.
etw926 Posted January 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 I don't think that is an issue since I'm am able to get good speed during what seems to be off peak hours. I just think that Verizon here has not caught up with their customer base. WTG VERIZON!!!! LOL
FallowEarth Posted January 14, 2006 CID Share Posted January 14, 2006 The traceroute shows that the communication between the router and modem could be a lot better. In order to determine whether its an issue with the router or with the modem, you will have to make a direct connection and provide a traceroute. coney Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 I also live in Brooklyn N.Y., and I am having the same problem. The speeds are fine when I wake up in the morning, but when 10:00 am comes along, my speed goes up and down until it is up to dial-up speeds and will stay that way all day long even though my upload speed is ok. I called Verizon and they said they don't see any problems at all, so to keep me happy, they are sending me a new modem. I know for a fact that will not solve my problem. etw926......your not alone!! FallowEarth Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 I don't think that is an issue since I'm am able to get good speed during what seems to be off peak hours. I would just like to say something about this from experience. It may seem logical that a slowdown during the same times each day would be due to network congestion. But this is not always the case. There can be many other explanations for regular performance degredation. Equipment overheating, local power issues causing modem signals to wonk out. Just because it is not a software/OS issue, it does not mean that it is a network issue. There's lots in between.

These are my numbers if it can help. Your first hop shows a problem with communication to the modem (the times should be less than 10ms). If you have another PC in the home, I would connect it directly to the modem, run a trace, and see if the first hop is any better. Also, try another ethernet cable (you are connecting ethernet vs. USB?). If this does not resolve the first hop, call your ISP for a new modem.
