bluize Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 I'm new and have been reading about the various tweeks and the use of Cablenut. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but here is what I need to know. I live in a remote area (no cable modem, DSL), I just had installed a wireless modem. It uses FM to connect to the internet. I also have hooked up the Vonage VOIP phone system. According to the Wireless Provider I have a constant 512 up and 512 down. I have been noticing a slowness with going to web pages (just hanging for 5-10 seconds) and when I checked with Vonage regarding voice quality (choppiness) we ran some tests and I was informed that I was having a latency problems. I ran the line tests on here and it came back with no latency problems. I have no virus or spyware problems (all tests come back clean). I just downloaded Cablenut and need to know how I should make my settings to get the max. thru put Up and Down. Can someone help!! Thanks
richcornucopia Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 Try the attached file for cablenut, reboot, and test your speed. Run a tracert so we can see if you are still experiencing latency issues, start, run, cmd, tracert testmy.net. You said your connection is wireless to the modem, how about after that do you have a router, wired or wireless? And welcome to the forum . bluize Posted January 18, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 I don't see a file attached? Am I missing something ... After the modem it goes to the Vonage Linksys Broadband Router Model RT31P2 from there it goes into the PC on the Ether Port ... Thanks richcornucopia ... richcornucopia Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 Right at the bottom of my text there should be a link. Try testing directly connected to the modem. This way you can be sure vonage isn't eating up any of the bandwidth.
bluize Posted January 18, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 Richcornucopia, I did a screen refresh and the file attachment showed up ... Sorry about that ... I'll do as requested. Thanks for your help and I'm glad I found this place ... Lots of great info here ...

bluize Posted January 18, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 I did the tweaks, disconnected the Vonage Router and connected directly from the wireless to my PC. Couple of interesting things. When I checked my network connection after removing the Vonage Router, the network connections showed the wireless connection was 10 Mbps ... Did the tracert and looked at the times ... Had one that was way out of line with the other, in excess of 300ms .... Others were less than 170ms ... Hooked everything back up (Vonage box) checked network connection and it now showed 100 Mbps!!!! ... Did the tracert and the times were much better with the Vonage box ... Highest was 225ms but others were around the 150ms or less range ... Any ideas?
richcornucopia Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 The 10 and 100 are just your lan connection, not how fast your actual internet is and because your connection is 512 if it is 10 or 100 it doesn't matter. How do the speeds compare connected directly vs router?
bluize Posted January 18, 2006 Author CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 Actually they are faster with the router ...

richcornucopia Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 Eveything looks good there except for number 6, 370 is bad. You might want to contact your provider and see if they are having any issues, maybe they will send somebody out. Besides that one bad hop how close are you getting to 512/512? richcornucopia Posted January 18, 2006 CID Share Posted January 18, 2006 You are getting over your cap on both upload and download, thats very good. Usually you should be satisfied if you can get 90% or your advertised speed, but you're getting higher than advertised on both so I would probably just leave it alone if it stays like that. FallowEarth Posted January 19, 2006 CID Share Posted January 19, 2006 DHCP for IPv6 (DHCPv6) implementation is popping up here and there for commercial use, but is not well-used for residential connections, for the most part. It is possible that the routers in your ISP's network, and in the backbone they use, are not configured optimally for communication over IPv6; they are most likely using IPv4 exclusively. Check this out: http://www.tahi.org/dhcpv6/ I would call up your ISP if you want definite answers.
