Internet speeds serious problem, help needed

hey all, I'm having problems with the speeds of my broadband. According to the advertisements I'm supposed to be running on an 8mbps connection. Now I'm not to computer wise, but I do alot of online gaming here and there but I can't play due to high ping times. I tried the speed test and This is what I got:

Upload speed - 0.2 mbps

Download speed - 1.75 mbps

:whaa:

If anyone knows Anything I could try that would be great, I'm not to good on computers, so if someone could explain what I need to do It would be greatfully appreciated

Thanks, Kane

Right I'll try :)

I looked through the forum and understood maybe 5% of it, decided the Cablenut was a good place to start...

With the cablenut on my PC and configured.

I got the download speed to 1.8mb, and the upload speed to 0.24mb.

considering I'm supposed to have an 8mb connection this is pretty poor I'm guessing. I then took the ping test this told me I have a ping of 4012ms...

I then tried ending some of the processes on the task manager which is usually sat at 37 i got it to 26. And upped my virtual memory to 4027mb. I tried running the games again and my pings are around the 300-400 mark, which gets me kicked due to lagg.

I'm not to sure as to what info you'll need to help me.

Thanks again, kane

could be true, but a 2Mbps is enough bandwidth to play online games unless something else is running in the background thats eating up bandwidth. try running a  trace route to the server u play on. if u dont know how, go to start and then run and type in cmd, then u should have a dos box pop up and then type ( ex tracert testmy.net). no need to put in the www are anything just tpye in the IP of the server that u are trying to play on and u will see all the hops and pings from u to there. but make sure u type in tracert first then space and then IP.

I have a 7 meg cable conn and it gets bad at night sometimes and i will switch over to my dsl conn which is 1.5 meg and have no trouble at all playing online.

4000+ ping time is horrible.  Sounds like it is possibly a hardware issue.  Try this from the command line:

ping -n 50 www.testmy.net

Then post back with the "ping statistics" part (not everything).  Also post back all the results from a traceroute:

tracert www.testmy.net

This should allow us to determine whether the speed issue is on your end or not.

hey,

these are the ping results:

PING 81.157.92.213 (81.157.92.213) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 81.157.92.213 ping statistics ---

5 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 4034ms

I've disk cleaned, cleared ssl state, deleted cookies, cleared history, registry cleaned, defragged, spyware tested, virus scanned, and done all of the Tuneup processes. I installed cablenut last night and set it up.

i tried to do what dakeith said but couldn't figure it out lol.

cheers, kane.

I have windows XP, I can run one from my machine with a little guidance. I have no particular server that I use though. If this makes a problem? Like my sig I made It myself....on paint hehe I'm so proud hehe.

thanks, kane.

Very nice...looks like an Ibanez?

Ok here's what you do:

-click start, run, type cmd and click ok

-type tracert www.testmy.net and hit enter

You should be able to drag your mouse over an area to select it.  If not, right-click on the screen and click Mark.  Highlight all of the traceroute results and hit enter to copy them to the clipboard.  Then post results here.

Trace looks fine there, especially from overseas.

Speaking of which, have you tried testing from a European mirror?  There are currently 3, check em out at the bottom of this page: http://www.testmy.net/tools/mirrors.php

Also, run this test and post results: https://www.speedguide.net:8080/

And this online malware scan: http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan

Otherwise, one of the best ways to determine whether your speeds are caused by software is to boot into safe mode with networking and try testing your speeds then.  To do this, power down your computer normally.  Then return power and immediately start tapping the F8 key repeatedly (a couple times per second).  You should eventually come to the windows advanced options menu.  Here, use the arrow keys to select "safe mode with networking" and hit enter to select it.  You may then need to select the partition to boot to (chances are you only have one) and hit enter to proceed.  Accept all the warnings and try a few speedtests (use a mirror) when you're up.  FYI simply restarting the PC will return you to normal mode after you are done.

2nd tests results:

TCP options string = 020405ac01010402

MTU = 1492

MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1452

MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising your MTU value.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535

RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits

Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65535

Note: TCP 1323 Options need to be enabled for RWIN over 2^16 (65535). Windows 9x might also need the MS Vtcp386 fix.

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.

Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)

255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

63888 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms

Your TCP Window limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 116 hops

TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

That would be the Canadian server.  Try one of these:

Looks from the other test that some tweaking might do good.  But before we do that, did you have any luck figuring out which speed package you are on?

Musta been a fluke.  I'd do a bunch of tests from those 3 servers and see what kind of average you get.

I've also attached a cablenut settings file that should work for your connection.  If you haven't already, download and install cablenut from www.cablenut.com .  Then unzip the file attached and run it.  It will open the Cablenut adjuster window.  Click save to registry, then reboot the PC.

After you are up, try some more tests from the mirrors above to compare before and after.

Speeds not looking too poor.

What are your current cablenut settings?  Did you try the file I attached above?

You can take a look through Vanburen's recent cablenut collections: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-1013 ...try a few and see what works best for you.  Just remember to restart after applying changes to the registry.
