evildevil Posted January 5, 2005 CID Share Posted January 5, 2005 I have had CoX out to my place a couple of times and they can't figure out why my computer is only getting about 1MB download when I am paying for the 5MB download. My upload is fine at 768KB. Is there any setting in the registry that can be changed to increase the transfer speed in downloads or increase the speed in the internet overall. I havent done any changes whatsoever to my computer. The setting are default of Windows XP Pro SP2. My computer is p4 3.0 With HT 1.5GB PC3200 RAM 160GB WD 8MB FX5900 128MB 100 Base T Cox has come out twice and they give me the same answer every time.. "The line is fine and they are no problems on their End."
Shug7272 Posted January 5, 2005 CID Share Posted January 5, 2005 One of my friends had the EXACT same problem just as you described with Cox, after about 2 months they FINALLY figured out his cap was set at the 1MB spot, so you may call them up and ask for them to check your cap. Good luck.

evildevil Posted January 5, 2005 Author CID Share Posted January 5, 2005 I maintain my computer on a daily basis to make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary installed or running in the background. I haven't tried any tweaks because I dont want to risk making it worse. I am running Win XP Pro SP2. My upload works great at 768KB. I took the advice and called COX to check my CAP and they said it was at 5MB download. I need help!!

VanBuren Posted January 5, 2005 CID Share Posted January 5, 2005 try another LAN cable from your modem, sometimes damaged cables can slow down alot. Also reboot your modem shut off power for 30 seconds then plug it in again. good luck VanBuren
resopalrabotnick Posted January 5, 2005 CID Share Posted January 5, 2005 also, if you're stumped, have a buddy with a laptop jack in. if he's good, then you know it's your machine. have him bring his own patch to the modem too, in case you do have a bad cable. I believe that COX (at least in Tucson) takes problems seriously and tries to fix them. I never worked for COX but I did work for Qwest years ago and it had problems then and still do........anyway glad your almost back to "normal" Microwave
