richcornucopia Posted April 28, 2006 CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 Anything special I should do before I install linux? I've got 2 sataII drives, one for storage, the other for more storage and the os. If I just take some space off of the sataII drives and make a new partition to install linux on, should everything work once installed? So I will have a choice between xp and linux at startup. richcornucopia Posted April 28, 2006 Author CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 Am I gonna have to format the whole drive that xp is on?
kurupted Posted April 28, 2006 CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 Well some programs allow you to do a "smart" partition so you wouldn't have to format your PC, Partition Magic is one of those programs.
richcornucopia Posted April 28, 2006 Author CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 Yea I've got partition manager. If I make a new partition from one of the drives and install linux on it, will I be able to choose linux or xp at startup or will xp no longer boot? richcornucopia Posted April 28, 2006 Author CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 Anyone, or should I just go for it and forget about xp?
massey Posted April 28, 2006 CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 I assume you are just useing one harddrive. I would look into a boot manager as well. Sorry you will have to google that one. I really dont know that much about them. Use your program to partition the way you want it. Install lynix. Then install your boot manager when you boot up. I think acronis comes with a boot manager. I think that would be your best bet. www.lynix.org may be a place to poke around for more information
php Posted April 28, 2006 CID Share Posted April 28, 2006 Linux comes with a boot manager, probably LILO or GRUB. If you have a choice during installation I would pick GRUB.
