NY, Queens Road Runner Preimium Cable modem help

Recommended Posts

Good evening fellas.  I just got RR premium a week before, and at first the download speeds were okay.  However after I downloaded and followed some of Van's tweaks and instructions it's been running very slowly.  I thought maybe I screwed up, so I reinstalled Windows XP without formating.  Question is, could it be that my computer is that screwed up now, and I would have to format the whole thing, or could it be something else?  My download speeds been going anywhere from 1mb to 4mb.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Is it my computer?  Do I need to change my settings?  Or is just RR.  I have a tech guy coming in Saturday, but I don't know how much help he'll be. I've already tried cleaning the comp.and recycling the router and modem.

ok, did you back up the registry settings when you tweaked? restore them then. otherwise, install cablenut again and have it set default values. if that doesn't help you will need to try different tweak settings. but it does sound like you tweaked it too much.

(or there is something wrong with the line, in which case the tech might be able to help.) what is your config? i mean networking hardware you are using...

Hey.  My registry should be back to stock, because I reinstalled Windows XP and I'm using a Linksys BEFSR41.  Not too sure what ethernet card, because I'm at work.  It's old though.  Any suggestions on which version tweak I should try?  Or what the hell is wrong? Haha.  Thanks

can you post a speed test

do you think u got some ad aware hanging up your connection?

is it only you using the internet line or some one else in your house

do you have wireless is it possible some one hacked ur encryption key?

It's not a wireless.  I use ethernet cables.  And, I doubt I have spyware.  Ad-aware detects clean.  What's hacking an encryption key? Excuse me cluelessness.

Hey Van.. I've already tried all those steps.  Anything else?  BTW thank you everyone for helping thus far

1. What OS are you running? Examples: Windows 98, Windows XP. If you have XP make sure you have SP2 installed! Also download the p2p fix for SP2 here

If you have a MAC try BroadbandOptimizer

2. Who your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is, and what the advertised speed for download/upload is.

3. What tweaking programs you already have installed, and run this test.  Copy all text and paste it in your post! For security reasons, blank out your IP #.

4. What speed do you have against https://testmy.net and http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ also download this Tracert and Ping program (made by php) and click on check.bat.  When it's done, copy and paste the results in your post.

5. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.  You most likely only need "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)."  If you share files on your home network, you also need "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks."

6. Open Internet Explorer and select the Tools menu, go to Internet Options, Connections tab, click the

LAN settings button, make sure nothing there is checked.

7. Never Connect to your modem via USB ! Always connect to your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it depends on the ISP service unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL. If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

8. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for at least 30 seconds.

9. Download, update, and do a scan with SpyBot and Ad Aware to remove any spyware

10. ZoneAlarm firewall has known problems with dropping speed, I suggest to uninstall it and compare speed

11. Install Outpost Firewall, Sygate Firewall, or Zone Alarm.

12. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one, AVG, Avast!, and Ewido are great.

13. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates

14. Download and run CCleaner

15. Go to VanBuren testmy.net Cablenut settings and install Cablenut 4.08 and Vanburens cablenut settings version 9

16. If you choose to build your own tweakfile with j79zlr's webpage, I suggest to leave SynAttackProtect to 0, and use a latency value between 150 and 300 ms. If your calculated TcpWindowSize is above 65535 and your webrowsing seem sluggish, i suggest to test with a TcpWindowSize and GlobalMaxTcpWindowsize that is 44 x ( your MSS value ) and change Tcp13230pts to 0.

BROCK.  Linksys BERFSR41..  Sorry about that Van.

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500

MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460

Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535

RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits

Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65535

Note: TCP 1323 Options need to be enabled for RWIN over 2^16 (65535). Windows 9x might also need the MS Vtcp386 fix.

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.

Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)

256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms

Your TCP Window limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 120 hops

TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

Java data: Vendor = Sun Microsystems Inc., Version = 1.5.0_07

------  Web100 Detailed Analysis  ------

Good network cable(s) found

Normal duplex operation found.

Web100 reports the Round trip time = 103.19 msec; the Packet size = 1460 Bytes; and

No packet loss - but packets arrived out-of-order 32.80% of the time

This connection is network limited 99.97% of the time.

Web100 reports TCP negotiated the optional Performance Settings to:

RFC 2018 Selective Acknowledgment: ON

RFC 896 Nagle Algorithm: ON

RFC 3168 Explicit Congestion Notification: OFF

RFC 1323 Time Stamping: OFF

RFC 1323 Window Scaling: OFF

ok now try this

i assume you did install cablenut and downloaded version 9 of my tweakfiles

browse to this folder where you unzipped it

VanBurens_cablenut_settings_version_9CABLE_DSL_FIBER_DIAL-UP

WinXP_2K_CABLE_DSLMTU 1500

now click on the Cable & DSL 6000.ccs

now you see alot of values in cablenut adjuster, click save to registry

now reboot your PC

test speed again, both from testmy.net and that nitro NDT server, also run that TCP analyzer again and post results

VanBuren :)
