predninja Posted February 25, 2004 CID Share Posted February 25, 2004 holy cow that sbc offering 6.0 mbps down/384-600kbps up is available to me... in sbc local office area to me... that would be rocks if quality is very good. i shall test new bandwidth for quality... oh crap that sbc dropped price to lower rates that great news to me... goodbye cable greedy eater. that cable is overpriced... if sbc got more customers than cox then cox is fucked up and screwed. i ll see if quality is better on sbc then i ll stay with sbc... god bless sbc for lowering price. But good things obviously came to the one who waited--------> ME!!!! Not bad for $44.95/month and NO LIMITS!!! So spoiled now!

Swimmer Posted March 2, 2004 CID Share Posted March 2, 2004 You need to be careful with SBC DSL. I have a few friends that are on it and that are running sub 700kb on the 1.5 plan. They live less then 3000 feet from the co... I live in IL so that could be some of it but I have tryed every thing on their computers and have only got about 10-20kb faster. However, the connection becomes unstable and the ping jumps around. If I were you I would go with the COX Cable. Remember speed isnt everything! You have to have a reliable connection to have that speed!

Sure I am paying twice as much as before but I am also (at the moment) going almost 100 times faster. I think that is a fair trade-off I have had SBC DSL for over a year now. They keep giving more speed for about the same money so I indulge. I have had zero outages since my DSL service started. Granted I lose synch every once in a while but that just lasts for a couple seconds. I am connected to a Remote Terminal and not directly to the CO (THANK GOD!). Most of the people that have problems believe it or not are the ones that are close enough to be hardwired to the CO. By being hooked to an RT the DSL signals strength is much much greater and consistent over longer distances. The package I have states that downloads should be between 1.5-3Mbps. I obviously get quite a bit more than that. If not for the RT I could very well still be in dialup land!

MICROWAVE Posted March 2, 2004 CID Share Posted March 2, 2004 reddog00, Thats exactly how I feel, Iam going to pay around $20.00 for shitty dial-up anyway so for $20.00 more I can get at least 50 times faster speeds from cable, not a bad deal in my opinion.I may be prejudice about dial-up and DSL only because I worked with copper phone lines for alot of years.I think for me anyway cable is the best thing to come along since sliced bread he he.Although there are many different types of connections I think someone should experiment to see what works best for them.In my case thats COX HSI in Tucson AZ.It wasn't that long ago where there was not but one choice and that sucked, now there are many choices and better pricing along with killer speeds and kick ass equiptment.......its a tough life ain't it...hehehe Microwave

drake0727 Posted March 3, 2004 CID Share Posted March 3, 2004 this is my average speed with sbc expert package it's advertised at 1.5-3.0, but it's much higher i think it's cuz i called em up and cussed em out cuz they originally upgraded my upload, but kept dl at 1.5 ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 4063 Kbps about 4.1 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is: 496 KB/sec Auth Code: 2060946 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 73 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.06 second(s) Validation Link :: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/auth_check.cgi?ta=&top=&num=2060946&kbps=4063&gen=gen&a=1.71428571428571&b=1.14285714285714&c=1145.14285714286

reddog00 Posted March 6, 2004 CID Share Posted March 6, 2004 The speeds you get from this Expert Plus package from SBC obviously depend on a lot of different variables. But the Expert Plus package is just marketed as 1.5-3.0 down. It actually is 1.5-6.0. Great marketing for SBC because they knew it would be very very hard for people to attain the top 6.0Mbps speed because of all the variables such as distance, line condition, CO or RT based.... A lot of stuff can screw with your speeds so this is why they say 3.0 is the cap so they will not have everyone and his mother calling to complain that they are not getting 6Mbps as advertised. Oh yeah one more tidbit for you drake. Not trying to make you feel bad but when your DSL line speeds are provisioned they are always done seperately. Usually always your upload gets upgraded first because it is easier. The download speed takes a lot more time and effort from the ISP to get installed correctly and up and running. My upload went up about a week before my download speeds got to where they were supposed to be. Just the way things are upgraded I guess. Do not know exactly what has to be done but I know that every customer goes through this upload first download second process when they acquire or even upgrade their DSL. Hope this helps a little ;D

drake0727 Posted March 7, 2004 CID Share Posted March 7, 2004 hmm didnt know that, but my friend that used to work at sbc said that the only way to get results is to call and bitch alot, that's what i did, eventually they will send you to the NOC(the people that can uncap the bandwith). the engineers set up the speed and the noc does the rest. i called and asked them i needed to speak to an NOC represenative and oh they were shocked lol. case in point, after that call, my speed INSTANTLY shot up to the 5mbps level so im satisified. this is just my story so hope this helps ppl lol. Swimmer Posted March 7, 2004 CID Share Posted March 7, 2004 That is interesting...... I havent heard about any other isp who will uncap a line just to make sure that you are getting what you paided for. Since i am guessing you were on the 3.0mbs plan i an suprised that they uncapped you to 5.0mbs. Did they change your upload to?
