JH2688 Posted February 15, 2008 CID Share Posted February 15, 2008 I'm planning a video sometime. and i need some help picking one out. I have no idea what to look for. I want a good one but i also want to be cheap maybe around $100, but willing to go more if i think its worth it. I want to be able to play games like Doom 3 and starcraft 1 & 2 with fairly good quality. I just bought a 22" LCD Hann-G monitor. so i should be able to get pretty good quality. heres my spec: let me know what else you need AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core 4600+ 2 GB ram motherboard- http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2554&ProductName=GA-MA69G-S3H need DVI outputs
Buntz Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 For 100.00 dollar it is going to be hard to find a good new video card. It might be better for you to buy a older used card. It will give you more bang for your buck. If I was going to buy a new video card I would at lease buy a ATI 3850 for $169.99 to $229.00 or a 3870 for $200.00 to $250.00 or a Nvidia 8800GT for 200.00 to 250.00. Try to get one with at lease 512 of video memory.
vern Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102703 Not a great card, but, with the mail in rebate, @ 85.00, you can't beat the price vs performance ratio. Should play the games you have with no problems.

vern Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 Unless he is still running windows 2k or earlier; that shouldn't be a problem. DirectX 10 is included with the card.
Buntz Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 DirectX 10 only works with Vista. The video card will use DirectX 9 with XP or any older OS. That card will work if he turn down the eye candy. I made the same mistake ,I went and brought a 24 inch monitor and lock the computer up trying to playing COD4 at 1920 X 1200 at high setting. My two 7800GT could not handle it. So I am looking to upgrade my video card soon. For now I just turn down the eye candy.

Learn something new every day. I still wouldn't "upgrade" to Vista just for directX 10 though.
coknuck Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 I didn't think DirectX 10 was backward compatable! http://news.softpedia.com/news/DirectX-10-and-so-it-ends-7762.shtml
Buntz Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 DirectX 10 is not backward compatible. The card can also play DirectX 9 too. It is able to do both.
coknuck Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 If you can get it to work on DX9 I bet it runs like shit!
Buntz Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 People are still debating that. Some people say some of the games run better on DirectX9, But the eye candy is not as good.

Im not a hardcore gamer, but i want my games to look nice. Unless your going for a 8800 utlra with SLI it doesn't matter anyway. Your not running the game under DX10. There are only a hand full of video games that use it, and you need some bad ass cards to play it. So your going to be using DX9 no matter what. If you turn down the screen resolution in the game down from 1600 X1200 to 1280 X1024 you will be able to use a lesser card and turn the eye candy back up some. Buntz Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 I would not go with the Sapphire 3650, but the 8600GT is not a bad card . Most people [ including me ] will tell you to save up some more money and get the 8800GT instead. It is alot better card, more bang for your bucks. You do have to take NewEgg reviews with a grain of salt.

Buntz Posted February 16, 2008 CID Share Posted February 16, 2008 There are not that many DirectX10 games out now, most are still DirectX9 so the video card will run the game in DirectX
