Tram Posted February 22, 2005 CID Share Posted February 22, 2005 OK guys- I may be getting somwhere.. Who knows.. Latest test.. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 217 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 1013 KB) Download Speed is:: 26 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Test Time:: Mon Feb 21 18:18:24 PST 2005 Bottom Line:: 4X faster than 56K 1MB download in 39.38 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 26.4 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/id-69EY5RIF2 Spent a couple hours on the phone with DWay.. To have them ask me to run several speed tests.. The Techie told me that "they" feel that since I was over 200Kbps that, this speed is "very reasonable" and that if it drops below that again, I should give them a call.. I have installed the newest software - 4.2.x.x or whatever is on the DirecWay website...This test is with the numbers MtnFolk posted.. We'll see what happens I suppose. sst45jeff Posted February 25, 2005 CID Share Posted February 25, 2005 Try running this utility ...set it to "extreme" & check optimal settings box at bottom and see if it makes any kind of difference at all. HINT: Before you RUN it, click on File and save a backup of your present settings to the directory of your choice. In this manner you can restore your TCP/IP stack to where it is at the moment if the utility doesn't perform something "magical" for you! https://testmy.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1501.0;id=

VanBuren Posted February 26, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 26, 2005 not bad mrmartinjr always use 2992 KB testfile when comparing diffrent tweaks, cos if you get a little lag spike with a 579 KB testfile your score will suck, if you use a larger file, the score will be more accurate VanBuren
bdantz Posted February 26, 2005 CID Share Posted February 26, 2005 Guys, Bear in mind that Direcway is all over the map on speed. I have owned my D'way for 2 1/2 years and I've had 2.1 mbps on Saturday morning and go down to 97 kbps on sunday afternoon. Hey Van,, If u read this... What do people use for satellite internet in Sweden? I'm curious if regional loading is an issue. I'm in upstate New York near Albany and our Local backbone speeds are stable (roadrunner at work) but because D'way returns to their center elsewhere, the packets get pinged around 12 to 20 times before they find home. what the best way to account for extra hops along the way in respect to tcp/ip settings at registry level? Thanks P.S. This forum is AWESOME!!!

bdantz Posted February 26, 2005 CID Share Posted February 26, 2005 Hi Sorry about that. The cable provider around here is Time Warner. (Road Runner) We use this where I work. Geographically closer site just seem to be faster on Road runner than on D'way. The "Elsewhere" I was referring was the DWay Network Operations Center located on a floating island somewheres in the south pacific. This Island is inhabited only by beatiful polynesian women whom have an allergy to wearing clothes. This is the conclusion I've come to because when I upload to this Island (woops, Network Operations Center), things and packets just slow down and or dissappear completely. Seriously, Their NOC is somewheres NOT near me and has limited bandwitdh. Two things appear when I test my speeds at work versus at home on D'way. (Same target site used each time) 1) Less hops on roadrunner than D'way (You woulexpect a couple more anyway because of the uplink/downlink) 2) Road Runner sees a quiet time to busy time speed degradation of about 30 - 40 % due to internet backbone congestion. okay 4 things 3) D'way sees a 50 - 90% degradation during the same times. (internet PLUS D'way congestion) 4) The number of hops go up in both cases. (MORE WITH DIRECWAY) FYI: D'way sits on a tier 1 ISP (Level3.com) so the pipe to their door is big enough for lots of customers. What I (and many others) suspect is that during busy times, Direcway does 1) lower the quantity of data per packet (size) and/or 2) increase the time between visits to you. (upload/download acks). This is getting a liitle lengthy. I'm trying to devise a way for a pc to 1) recognize these changes and 2) adjust to the dynamics of conditions. Probably too ambitious, but what the heck
VanBuren Posted February 26, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 26, 2005 hey bdantz now i understand what you mean, most likely your right about them in some way reduce the speed do you see any change if you run this test http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ 1. with low traffic and good speed 2. during peaktime and slow speed copy the results from Statistics and More info I do not know how this will read, it might read the NOC TCP settings and not the settings from your pc give it a shot VanBuren

VanBuren Posted March 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 2, 2005 hey sst45jeff estimate = 112.93 based on packet size = 10Kbits, RTT = 93.23msec, and loss = 1.0E-6 The theoretical network limit is 112.93 Mbps The NDT server has a 8192.0 KByte buffer which limits the throughput to 686.44 Mbps Your PC/Workstation has a 31.0 KByte buffer which limits the throughput to 2.61 Mbps The network based flow control limits the throughput to 2.71 Mbps Client Data reports link is 'Dial-up', Client Acks report link is 'Dial-up' Server Data reports link is 'OC-48', Server Acks report link is 'OC-12' it seems like the test read the data from a server, showing a RTT of 93.23msec and a RWIN of "Your PC/Workstation has a 31.0 KByte buffer which limits the throughput to 2.61 Mbps" this means that no matter how much tweaks your running, you will alwasy be limited by this low RWIN on the server i dont know why it claims 56k, all i can say is that its not always accurate, it reports my connection as T3 ( 45Mbps) sometimes and im on 10 Mbps VanBuren
