ratchet Posted April 4, 2009 CID Share Posted April 4, 2009 So I've had this Acer cheapo notebook for over a year now. It has an AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-58 Proccessor with 2GB of RAM and Vista Home Premium . Does the "64" mean it can run Vista 64 operating system? If this is the case, how would I go about moving to Vista 64? If it could be done, I'd have to re-install/change all my apps to 64, which would be a pain! According to my MemInfo app, I never, never, ever even come close to using 50% of the 2GB of RAM. If it was running 64, it would take advatage of the 2Gs, correct? Thank You! x_6985381 Posted April 4, 2009 CID Share Posted April 4, 2009 Yes AMD 64 is a processor capable of reading and running 64-bit script. To do this you would need to purchase any 64-bit Windows Vista edition. Save everything you need to save to another hard drive. Or throw it all on a thumb drive if there isn't a lot. After doing this you'd then have to access your BIOS and make the laptop boot (load) from the DVD copy of Vista 64-bit Then install vista 64-bit, make sure everything's running. Then transfer everything back, and start searching for 64-bit apps that you had prior, but only 32-bit. This will erase everything on your hard drive, and will reformat. If you don't feel comfortable, don't do it.
ratchet Posted April 4, 2009 Author CID Share Posted April 4, 2009 Thanks for the reply! I'm 61 and for what I use this for (usually just at the children"s homes) I indeed would not feel comfortable. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
coknuck Posted April 4, 2009 CID Share Posted April 4, 2009 There really is not that much difference between the two. Most drivers are geared for 32 bit. Most if not just about all programs are 32 bit. I'm using 64 bit Windows 7 and the X86 program file folder has 3 time more programs listed in it than the 64 bit folder. So stay with what you have for another few years until 64 bit programming picks up. Hope this helps in your decision.
tommie gorman Posted April 4, 2009 CID Share Posted April 4, 2009 Yeah, 64 bit sometimes requires the proper downloads, I'd stick with 32 bit also. Although 64 bit is ok.
