Spooner Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 I did call COX and they replaced my modem and did some line tests that were OK and they also did some speed tests to their local server which turned out to be 3.96 meg down and 247 up (test.lvcm.com) They said everything was good and that I may be experiencing problems due to network traffic and the distance to testmy.net server. That's why I came to you guys....the experts
theelviscerator Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Well you left that part out conveniently.. always test your speeds to different places.. one slow site does not a bad connect make.. try dslreports tests.. also I use toast.net.. If they are all slow its you .. if some are slow its THEM
Spooner Posted February 21, 2005 Author CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 sorry for the brevity. Cox is fast...just like they advertise (but the distance is short) DSLReports is slow, Testnet is slow and another one I forgot is slow. I'm lost and COX is saying it's not their problem or mine -- which confuses the hell out of me
Guest helloimtim Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 Could it be a virus or spyware? I recomend startup inspector. Run it hit consult and see what happens. Google starup inspector. Its free. Check for virus as well. Maybey an online test. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/. Hope that helps. Sounds to me like spyware problems. VanBuren Posted February 21, 2005 CID Share Posted February 21, 2005 ......I did. not looking so hot. 1. What OS are you running, ex win 98, win xp, if you have XP make sure you have SP2 installed! Also download the p2p fix for SP2 here https://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497 2. What service do you have, what is the advertised speed for download/upload. 3. What tweakprograms you already got installed, and run this test http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks copy and paste result URL adress in your post! 4. What speed do you have against www.testmy.net and http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ also make a tracert, go to start-run type command and hit enter, type tracert testmy.net and hit enter, right click copy all and paste it in your post. 5. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need. 6. Open Internet Explorer and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure nothing there is checked. 7. Connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it depend on the ISP service unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL. If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware. 8. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 30 seconds. 9. cholla Posted February 22, 2005 CID Share Posted February 22, 2005 Hi Spooner: First follow Van Burens steps. They usually improve speed. Next do a trace route to testmy.net to see if there is a long latency at any point or at all points. This will show if there really is a problem to testmy, net I'm betting there isn't,You can send your ISP the results & a copy of the testmy.net test & say why aren't your speeds better. There are a lot of Cox users here and they get close to their cap so you should too.I beleive your ISP will be where you find the problem.Below are mt NDT tests they are usually too fast also . NoShow Posted February 23, 2005 CID Share Posted February 23, 2005 Since I'm on Cox HSI I went to their test site and it's saying that I'm runnin slower than I actually am. I have been coming to testmy.net for a while now and I trust Testmy over their [Cox] test. Here's my results from both places including my upload. Pretty good difference especially in my upload. I tested mutiple times at Cox's site and it wasn't stable at all. My speed was all over the place, and getting worse. So I'll stick with Testmy.net since it's stable and my speed is consistant everytime I test.. Just follow Van Buren and you'll be good to go in no time at all.
