Jeffery,  With firefox was able to test properly.  Notice this is well past peak.  Speeds right now are throttled.  I used to run 3 or 4 times faster.  Again, Newsgroups are slower than dial up.

Best I've seen for quite some time and they finally stopped using the 80.22 proxy: Note the host  IP resolves to starband.net.

Now if they would unthrottle the news server I would stop complaining.

I get the above results for 59.99/month, contract 15months ..... 499 equip, free install.

Believe me I will get DSL  the day its available here, but will not pay $159/month (484 model) for any satellite connection from any company at this point. No way!

481 Telecommuter system.

750 down  100 up

Total cost with installation $854.00

3 year contract

monthly

119.00 first year

115.00 second year

109.00 third year

They did reduce my monthly bill from 119.00 to 89.99 since the problems started though.

The main difference between what I have and what you have is I can chew up lots more bandwidth than you can without getting fapped; well when mine is working, I can.

When the news server wasn't throttled and I was averaging about 1.2 megs down on it I could download 2 or 3 backup copies of playstation games in one day  that I already owned without SB complaing about it.

Starband does not state any #,s just like Direcpc would not give any #,s in their FAP policy which is one reason they lost the class action lawsuit against them.

Starband 484 has no FAP the 360 has a UPLOAD FAP of 500MB in a 7 day period. That is why they do not get sued for not having it in writing.

Every service provider has this in their policy to cover them legally just in case they want to lower your speed which seams like they are doing with the DW 6000's. Perhaps Starband has recently began limiting some badwidth as well due to the crowding of space on their transponders available. While it's only a guess, it would explain the throttled down speeds some are reporting.

Again, does anyone have news on their satellite that's supposed to be up in April or very soon? That should help BIG with their trouble some are reporting at this time. I'll try to find out more on it myself and post it here too.

You can opt for a cheaper contract with Starband, but I wouldn't want to be locked in so either a 1 year or month-to-month fee of $150-$160 would be perfect for my needs.

Howdy all, first time here..

I've done a few speed tests, but haven't recorded anything yet.

Like others I made the move because it was only option to 26.4 dialup and having to pay for 'Area Calling" to dial in to town 25 miles away.

Bought a used 360, and got in on the $40/mo starter plan, so the cost won't really be that much higher than the dialup ISP and the Area Calling together.

What few tests I've done have shown results of between 400K-700K down and 50K-70K up, but of course they vary quite a bit on time of day and atmosphere.

Nothing to  :haha: about, but definitely better than dialup.

Jeffery,  I don't believe that Starband has plans in the works for a new bird.  They can't even afford to stay on the two they are leasing now.  Perhaps you are referring to Wildblue?

Hey Webuser,  or should I say fellow Starbander.  I hope things work out well for you at Starband.  I'm curious, what exactly do you get for the $40.00 a month starter plan and how long does it stay at 40?  How much did you have to pay for install?  The best source for Starband info is at:  alt.starband.general on the newserver.

Webuser Does not have starband.

I don't :?:

Would you like me to post a pic of the dish and/or the modem?

Why did I get a bill in the mail from SB?

Why can I log into the SB "My Account" webpage?

Webuser, Ok you pulled one over on me, who are you really?

Joe Average Consumer.
