GeoffC Posted July 22, 2016 CID Share Posted July 22, 2016 testmy.net tests at download 2.1 Mbps zen speedtest tests at download 18-19 Mbps bt wholesale tests at download 24-25 Mbps which.co.uk tests at download 18.5 Mbps speedtest.net tests at download 18.1 Mbps Router data throughput 19.4 Mbps tests on laptop via wifi .... all within 5 minutes of each other with a further testmy.net result of : 11.1 Mbps Odd - 'til today I'd always judged testmy.net as being the reliable test bed , and yet it's strangely out on its own amongst these " benchmark " testers .. Pgoodwin1 Posted July 22, 2016 CID Share Posted July 22, 2016 Read all the tabs here: https://testmy.net/legit-speed-test.php - the results you have posted are not "benchmarks" for Internet performance.
Sean Posted July 22, 2016 CID Share Posted July 22, 2016 To rule out Wi-Fi or interference being the culprit, I suggest trying with network cable. Speedtest.net does a pretty good job at ironing out all the dips in a speed test which can make an erratic Wi-Fi connection look about as good as a wired connection. Most Internet provider provided speed tests are powered by Ookla, i.e. Speedtest.net in disguise. The usual tale-tale sign is the word 'Ookla' mentioned somewhere in the speed test screen, such as the following example in Pulse8's speed test:

That's the sad part about virtually all ISPs. If you think you'r not getting your money's worth, you have to build a case using a logical package of info; and be persistent. They may not like hearing you say TestMy's real results show otherwise, but usually after a second or third call, they'll put someone a little more knowledgeable on your problem. if they test your connection and tell you that you're connected with good speed, they'll usually say something like "that's all we're reaponsible for". That's not true. Even though they may be leasing bandwidth on someone else's lines and equipment, they are responsible for ensuring that their customers can use the Internet at the speeds they're advertising, unless their agreement with you says it's only the local connect speed they're promising you - check their fine print. But the obvious snag is they will look at the values by BT Wholesale and if those values agree or are in the same league as others' then that's where their argument will hinge irrespective of what testmy.net figures give . Sadly we need a definitive test that all would agree on - unlikely I guess . Thanks for your patience .
