cholla Posted January 11, 2021 CID Share Posted January 11, 2021 Like the title states: All the locations of the onboard Opera Browser VPN are much slower testing speed. Is this normal for other members ? I suspect it is but I thought I would ask. With VPN off the test is a little above what I pay for. I could post the results but I have slow internet for cable so no speed records being set by me.
Sean Posted January 11, 2021 CID Share Posted January 11, 2021 Same here from a quick test with Opera. Seems like their VPN server is heavily overloaded. Test with Colorado Springs server - Opera free VPN off vs on: Retest with a paid VPN subscription (HideMe, UK server) vs with the free Opera VPN, this time with TestMy London server: During the second test, TestMy was intermittently showing 'Offline' and took several attempts to complete the upload test. cholla Posted January 12, 2021 Author CID Share Posted January 12, 2021 Thanks for testing this Sean. I also noticed the Opera VPN had the auto adjusted smaller Download size. The speed on a download other than testmynet is much slower that the testmynet test speed. 20Kb/s for example on a video download. Test with Dallas server Opera Free VPN Off verses On. The speed I pay my ISP for is 20 Mbps Down & 2 Mbps Up. So with the VPN off I get a little above that.
Terrific Posted January 15, 2021 CID Share Posted January 15, 2021 YES! Turning off the Opera VPN totally solved my miserable internet speed problem. I was getting speeds of .3Mbps from my wifi and the same when I tethered my desktop imac to my phone. Yet my data speeds on my phone were over 10Mbps. Reading your post I immediately turned the Opera vpn off and my wifi speeds went to 10Mbps and my tethered speed went to 17Mbps. So thanks for the information! I've used Opera a long time & like it as a browser. I only use the VPN when I feel I need it.
