I work for comcast here in Oregon.  I don't handle the tech support side of broadband.  I use my own router.  If you use the router that's provided to you from comcast, you get all the support you need for it.  If you use your own router like myself, then you won't receive support for the router.  Basically what will happen is, tech support will have you hook up directly to your modem and if it all works, then your left to calling the manufacture on the router.

Also one of the things that i have come across that has been affecting speeds has been the system, configuration on the system, the outlet (if your running a splitter and sharing with the TV or on it's own outlet), even the wiring in the home.  Like in my last apartment i lived in.  Instead off all the outlets wired separately, they were all daisy chained together.  Since the manager wouldn't let me have the outlets rewired or put a new one in, i had an amp installed, and that solved part of my speed issues.

Right now with tech support your dealing with a 3rd party company, but were slowly bringing it all in-house.  We can thank AT & T on that.  Here we have a small portion of the calls coming into our repair dept, so it will be nice talking to someone local again, or at least someone in your market area.

So the choice is yours if you want to use comcast equipment or your own, it's a matter if you want the support from comcast or not.
