cholla Posted April 15, 2005 CID Share Posted April 15, 2005 There are several things to consider your link doesn't give enough information.Like does this modem have its own processor or does it use your CPU.I have read other posts & at least some of the time you use a bonded or shotgun connection. If you use the shotgun methode you should get a matched pair of modems that are made for this. With their own processors if possible. peepnklown Posted April 15, 2005 CID Share Posted April 15, 2005 Usually if the modem relies on your system its called a WinModem. Your ISP has to support v.92 to get higher speeds. Plus, dial-up at 52kbps is still slow,
cholla Posted April 15, 2005 CID Share Posted April 15, 2005 peepnklown: Yes I know that a controlerless software modem is sometimes called a WinModem but the modem manufacturers usually don't use this term.I just wanted to make sure 24kbps was looking for a hardware(on board controller modem) The link had limited information on the modem. You can get higher speeds if your ISP supports V.90 standards too. The main difference is the call on hold features. The modem he is looking at is a hardware modem I didn't research it much further.I have heard good things about Zoom modems .I would at least check out theirs.Diamond pioneered the shotgun technology but they went out of business for awhile.I'm not sure they are the same now. 24kbps are you using a serial or usb to connect the modem to your PC? dlewis23 Posted April 15, 2005 CID Share Posted April 15, 2005 you need to find out if thats a winmodem or a promodem a winmodem uses the processor a promodem has its own processor so its noticably faster.
cholla Posted April 15, 2005 CID Share Posted April 15, 2005 dlewis23: Thats what I said: Winmodem=software modem=controllerless modem All use OS CPU for control Hardware modem= on board controler modem =promodem(short for processor modem) less CPU use for modem However my personal experience my internal software modem is faster than my external hardware modem it just uses the CPU more. This is not the case for everyone. chzdhippt Posted April 15, 2005 CID Share Posted April 15, 2005 In all my years, I have had the best luck with USR Sportster or Courier Externals, as well as (no kidding) Zoom External modems. Supra makes a pretty nice external also. All of them are slow to me since I have had T1 or better for the last 10 years.
