Extremely low download speed problem

Hi,

I started using singnet broadband plan 512kbps download speed from last saturday at home. i am getting dwonload speed(internet file) in the range of 20-40 bib/s. actually my download speed while using DC++ is terrible and is about 3kib/sec.upload speed in DC++ is 30-40kib'/sec..

can anyone help me to improve my broadband connection speed including downloading files in DC++??

i am disappointed with singnet broadband plan..

a) I am using win XP home edition. BROADBAND ADVERTISED DOWNLOAD SPEED IS 512KBPS UPLOAD IS 256KBPS. ISP is singnet. i am using speedtouch modem Home plus 511e model. i am using ethernet cable connection and not USB from PC to the modem.

i am using netlimiter currently and i can increase the download limit to only 63K with the netlimiteter. upload speed i have kept as 1. since i need to download

  large files from DC++.

d) currently i am using Zonealarm system suite.i have used port forwarding in zone alarm but no improvement ar all in the download speed.

e) i have downloaded cablenet soft and have intsalled in my pc but am not sure about how to save CCS file and to which location.

f) i use mainly DC+ for file transfer..P2P..

Last time before using the netlimiter my uplaod was high in the range from 35-40kib/sec and download was very very slow(<3kib/sec) and no using netlimiter both the speeds have become worst..

what shall i do now??? some how i couldnot perform the tweak test as per the instruction. i got the message"busy server" there after starting the test.

can you please help??

  download and install Dr.Tcp http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe (done)

open Dr.Tcp(done)

make sure all fields is blank, if you see any value in any field, use delete and erase them, set all other options as Default

now click save and exit

open cablenut, click delete cablenut tweaks and click save to registry

now reboot your PC and make a new speed and tweaktest

after rebooting the PC my download speed and upload speed has increased to the following:

are you connected through a router?  if so, connect directly to your modem and set the link speed to 10Mbps half duplex

actually i am not using any router at home.

My PC is connected directly to the modem speedtouch Homeplus 511e.

i tried to chnage to haf duplex in the control panel under network connections for LAN. But after doing that my download speed fell to <8kb/sec..

can you plaese help me further?

actually before that as per the downlaod results mentioned above i was getting around 35-40 kb/sec but as per Diagnosis "May need help : running at only 36.29 % of your hosts average (com.sg) " how to improve the running to 90% of hosts average..

i suggest you stick to default values, cos when you get loss cablenut settings will slow you down due to large RWIN

open Dr.Tcp again

hes in Singapore, thats approx 200 to 250 ms ping to testmy.net

maxing out the connection on that ping is almost impossible

he also need to add approx 10% TCP overhead on hes score here

thats 321 x 1.1 = 353,1 / 512 = 69% of hes cap

thats normal, on a 200 to 250 ms ping i max out at around 69% of my 10 Mbps cap aswell

Answer: If you experience slow downloads, it could be for many reasons:

You need to optimize your operating system for your current connection speed.  First close all Peer to Peer (P2P) applications. Next run the TweakTest on this site.  Once you have optimized it, then run a Speed Test (best idea to select the site closest to your location).  This will give you a good idea what your maximum download and upload speeds are.  If you're getting within 10% of your connection speed, that's the best you can get!  If you are having trouble with your broadband connection, and it relates to packet loss, excessive latency, or internet or ISP congestion, running the Line Quality Test may help find the cause (requires logon, free signup).

 

The persons upload bandwidth who you are downloading from is maxed out.  Don't pay attention to the speed listed in the connection type column, its completely subjective and often is not a true reflection on the persons connection type since they can set it.  Find a person with fewer slots used, which should result in faster speeds.

 

The person who you are downloading from is using a bandwidth limiter.  There are two types: client based and third-party program. 

*    Often the client based types have set download/upload speed ratios in place so its not completely unfair.  (e.x. If the upload speed limit is set below 6 kB/s, then the client will restrict the client download speed to a 2:1 ratio).  This varies from client to client and obviously not all support upload limiting.  This type of speed limiting only restricts the uploading of files.  It does not limit getting the user lists or searches. 

*    A common third-party program that people use for limiting speed is NetLimiter.  This type of speed limiting is absolute; meaning it can/does limit the speed which you get/send filelists, userlists and searches.  One can suspect a person is using a tool such as NetLimiter when you're downloads are under 1kB/s.

 

You are sharing the internet connection with others on your LAN and they are using up all the available bandwidth. Tell them to knock it off  =) 

 

QoS Packet Scheduler Bandwidth Limiting might be enabled on the operating system.  Follow this guide on how to disable it on XP/Win2K3.  Windows 9x/ME/2K does not natively come with QoS.  QoS can also be enabled on your router (not by default though).  Look through the manual on how to check if its enabled.

 

Your ISP may be limiting your P2P traffic via some method of packet shaping.  This is very common at Universities and at the workplace.  Call up the ISP and inquire if they do anything with P2P traffic.  If the ISP does throttle you, then there is nothing that can be done to increase the speeds.

 

With asymmetrical connections (incoming data capacity is greater than outgoing, i.e. DSL, Cable, Satellite), uploading near your maximum will affect your downloading speed. For this, you can use the "Use small send buffer" under File -> Settings -> Advanced.
