netmasta Posted July 22, 2005 CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 One thing could be where you're downloading from. If the person your downloading from has an upload cap around 180Kb, there's not much you can do, execpt find another connection to download from. organ_shifter Posted July 22, 2005 CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 Torrent technology is based on seeds. You can only download as fast as the person's upload connection. If the torrent is not well seeded, you can't expect much speed wise. If you have service pack 2 installed, your downloads will suffer (even with the connection patch). With SP2 installed and patched up, I would get an extremely low connection total, and my speeds were terrible. After removing it, my speeds went back up. These are snaps of my settings that I get great speeds with (562 kB/s before
bshater Posted July 22, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 the site that im downloading the torrent from is very well seeded. so i think thats not a problem. hey organ, what was your speed withe service pack 2 installed?
organ_shifter Posted July 22, 2005 CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 I would be lucky if I got 30 kB/s. I did see closer to 70 kB/s sometimes, but that still sucked compared to what I used to get. SP2 is ok. Then I thought, I have a hardware firewall along with Kaspersky Personal Pro, plus the normal adware/spyware remover, why not uninstall SP2 since I'm already well protected? Once I did that, my speeds returned to normal. If you have it installed, you might want to beef up your security, and then remove it. It's not 100% mandatory right now. Plus, it seems to be aimed at the novice users that can't really protect themselves on the net. A person that is more technically advanced with their system probably doesn't run it anyhow. Without SP2:
bshater Posted July 22, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 22, 2005 hey guys, i finally found the solution to my problem. when i went to preferences, i noticed that i set my max download rate to 170 kb/s. thats why it wouldnt go any further. haha im so clumsy. but thank you all for trying to help me out. i appreciated it. hey organ, i think the service pack 2 isnt the reason why your download is so slow. it might me something else cuz i also have SP2 and my download is going above 400 kb/s now. RTB Posted July 23, 2005 CID Share Posted July 23, 2005 organ_shifter: 50001 random ports are complete overkill, not to mention the problems you might get if you forwarded them all. 40 is enough.
