php Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 Welcome to the forum SpeedWave Ethernet should always be faster, and it is possible that your CPU can't handle the speed, but I doubt it... read here... https://testmy.net/topic-2097
amc11890 Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 I was using an old pc with: xp pro 600mhz intel celeron processor 64mb of ram using verizon dsl speeds were pretty good, except for the fact that only one process could run at one time, which was a joke. resopalrabotnick Posted August 2, 2005 CID Share Posted August 2, 2005 sounds more like a problem with the os and its network settings. old box, sounds like an 98se? in that case at least mod the rwin settings.
Swimmer Posted August 3, 2005 CID Share Posted August 3, 2005 I know for a fact that an old pc will run fine... I can bring up my 266mhz box this weekend and run some test if you would like.. Ethernet is way better than USB.. Ethernet you can transmit and recieve at the same time.. here is an article that explains it in plain english.. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question667.htm
humorman Posted August 3, 2005 CID Share Posted August 3, 2005 Yes I that sounds like why old pc's run slower. Is because the number of connections you can have. So mod your settings. I know when I open up shareza or whatever it tell's me that it detects service pack 2. And it tell me that service pack 2 limits the number of open connections you can have so it slowes down your downloads. It is something they put in service pack 2 for security. And I notice alot of problems with it like dropping my ip etc. Because it has that dam firewall etc and it screws with the settings. So not just old pc's. milchama Posted August 3, 2005 CID Share Posted August 3, 2005 Holy cow! if you can afford a broadband connection ya can afford a new box even Dell has new boxes starting at $299. Or are you the kind of guys who still have your Tandy set up and running. :idea:Donate your old box to goodwill or some poor kid.
